[NAGDU] NAGDU Digest, Vol 153, Issue 6

Thank all of you for the information. I think I will check the temperature through the season and, if it starts to drop lower than 30, I will see how she tolerates it. Yes, you are right. Becky is 4 years old and in good health. So, she can handle it better than an older dog. Again, thanks for all of the input. See everyone in Merced!

Enjoy your holidays with your families and your pups.

Elise and the Beckster

This is wonderful! Now, when people ask me why all my money has
disappeared, I can just point them straight to the app! (I may
have a slight "spoiling my dog with toys" tendency.)

Hello, everyone.

This may be a silly question, but here it goes. Currently, Becky and I live in Long Beach, where the temperature does not get under mid-40 degrees in the winter. We are moving to Merced, where the temperature can get in the low 30's. Should I look into a dog sweater for Becky so she can keep a good body temperature and not get too cold. We will be out in this weather (dialysis and school.) Thanks for the information.

Hi there,
if it were me, i wouldn?t get her a sweater. maybe if she?s a doberman or boxer and has super short hair but, otherwise, i wouldn?t worry about it. labs were bred in northern parts where it gets much much colder than that.

If I'm remembering correctly she's a young lab in good health. If that's
correct, I seriously doubt she'll need a sweater.

I have a Doberman, which has a very short, single coat, and I don't put a
sweater on her until it's about that temperature. My lab and Boxer mix
doesn't wear a coat until it gets considerably colder. He does have a
double coat, but it's not as thick as a pure bred lab.

I do make sweaters. I have customers who purchase them for their labs, but
they generally live where it gets much, much colder. Also if a dog has
health concerns or is elderly they may be more comfortable in a sweater, but
in your situation my best advice is that it's not necessary.

Yes, I agree,? just to let you know I've been in zero Fahrenheit or
maybe minus something with no problem, thirties shouldn't create a
problem. But I do appreciate that you're concerned about your doggie.
I'd actually say extreme heat is more of a problem over all. Anyway good
luck with your move.

Usually, labs can handle down to 15 for a few hours at a time before they
require warmers on their body. The wind chill is more of a problem than the
temp.

I have never put sweaters on my dog. I might if I had been outside for long
periods of time where we were waiting for, say, a bus. I might be more
concerned about the feet if there was a lot of snow. I don't think I was
ever out a long time with my dog when we weren't walking.

In my experience, some dogs handle the cold better than others. If it's in
the 20's, and we're waiting for the bus even a few minutes, Krokus starts to
shiver. Other dogs I've had have been fine for longer.
I bought Krokus a pretty nice insulated coat on Amazon. It's not very
thick, but it cuts the wind and helps him stay a bit warmer. I don't
remember the details, but I can hunt it up if anyone wants to know.

Hey Elise,
I live in New Orleans where the temps are usually in the 40's for a winter low. Sometimes, however, like today, it gets into the 30's and snows. I have sweatshirt for Soleil, who is a lab and she wears them once it gets to about 45 because she will shiver and cry. I got the sweatshirts from Amazon, they are made by Zack and Zoey. They are the x large. She also has a winter coat that we got from petco that goes under her harness. It has a nylon shell and is full of that fluff stuff like you see in stuffed animals and a fleece inside. She wore that all day today.
Good luck!

We are moving to Merced, where the temperature can get in the low 30's. Should I look into a dog sweater for Becky so she can keep a good body temperature and not get too cold. We will be out in this weather (dialysis and school.) Thanks for the information.

Is it a good idea to buy a bark box? Are the treats healthy enough for the
dog. I am about to get my second guide dog but I know that with my first
guide dog I was very picky about the treats that she ate because I liked
keeping her very healthy . Healthy enough that she was able to work for 11
years until she retired. Thank you,

Yadira

I got my first barkbox and I thought the treats were fairly healthy. They
have a lot of natural ingredients although they are carb heavy barley
oatmeal potato. The first ingredient is a meat source.

I got one of these box subscriptions a few years ago. It was the one from
PetFlow. I liked that there was quite a bit in the box each month. It felt
like there was enough stuff to justify the expense. What I didn't like was
that often the toys and other accessory type items were not things I used.
The treats were always high quality and the dogs liked them. The toys
however, were sometimes plush and frequently for smaller dogs even though I
had specified I had a large dog when ordering.

I've thought of starting something like this specifically for guide and
service dog users, but not sure about the interest or if it would be that
much different from the boxes already available. Have to give it more
thought.
