Congratulations on the new dog!  I agree with Cindy, it's more like 
Christmas than having a child.

You can leave a dog in the house unattended while you stand in the yard and 
talk to the neighbor for half an hour.  You can put them in a crate if they 
can't be supervised.  Heck, you can attach a dog to a tie down to keep them 
from getting underfoot at dinner.  Dogs never talk back.  You'll never get a 
call from the school that your dog has had a bit of a shop project with some 
calculators and now owes $30 for repairs to school property.

Dogs are not people.  They think differently, act differently,get 
information about the world differently and will never be a little person in 
a fur coat.  Always keep that in mind when working with a dog.  If you 
expect them to be human, you will probably end up being very disappointed.
