[NAGDU] NAGDU Digest, Vol 143, Issue 4

It is good you contacted Ireland directly so they expect you. They told me they have had problems with "fake" service dogs. Like most European countries Ireland asks you to have your vet get your dog ready and fill out the paperwork. This usually involves an exam 10 days prior to arrival. The paperwork should be filled out immediately--it usually includes your (hotel) address. You need to send it immediately to the state office and do a follow up call to let the office know its coming because you need them to review the paperwork, stamp it and send it back to you in time. No check is needed because you have a service dog, but sometimes the office needs to be reminded.

I will be going to Ireland with a group at the end of July. Very exciting!
I have decided to bring Krokus, and I want to get my ducks in a row so I'm
not scrambling at the end.

I've let the airline know I'm bringing a guide dog (which I usually
wouldn't, but I think I have to for international travel.)

I have contacted the Irish Ministry of Agriculture and told them I'm
bringing my guide dog with me. They sent back a big PDF document of EU regs
on bringing a guide dog into an EU country. It wasn't all that clear to me.

It seems like all I have to do is get Krokus his rabies shot, which I have
to do anyway, then find a USDA-qualified vet to do the paperwork and give K
a de-worming 3 days before we go.

Is it really that easy? Isn't there paperwork I have to give the vet?
Where do I get the paperwork? Or does the vet have it? Do I need a rabies
certificate from my regular vet to show the USDA vet?

Hope some of you world travelers have the answers.

Tracy

Hello Amanda,

Like so many others have said, welcome to the list.

Regarding finding work, what I can say is, keep at it, and it will come.

Regarding the NFB, that's wonderful to hear. The NFB for me is like an extended family; the other guide dog users are like a subset of that family itself. As I write this message, I am not yet a guide dog user; however, my dog is arriving as I type. I get him tonight and begin home training tomorrow. I applied to GEB last May and, because of my work schedule and other things, we all decided to do home training. I just recently arrived home from attending the Washington seminar with many other Federationists, and it was a lot of fun. If you go to National Convention this year, I hope to see you there. My girlfriend, best friend and co-worker, Stacie, is also on this list and also a guide dog user. We are very excited about my new dog soon, and we are acting just like expecting parents. Earlier today we went shopping for the dogs and spent way more than we should have, but it was all worth it.

Take care, and write again soon.

Hello Amanda,

Welcome to the NAGDU Family! As Raul has said, we're anxiously awaiting
the arrival of his dog. I'm currently with my second guide dog, a black
lab from GEB, nnamed Cash! I received my first guide dog, also from GEB
on July 4, 2002. Ascot, who now looks down on us from Heaven completely
redefined independence for me. He and I were a team for 8 years. I had
to put him down in August of 2010 shortly after he had been diagnosed
with acute lymphoma. 11 weeks later, I was meeting Cash. We celebrated 6
years as a team in November of last year. Cash is not only a wonderful
guide dog, but he's taught me that one can certainly trust another guide
dog. We certainly have lots of adventures together and are expanding our
family with the addition of Raul's guide dog. Please feel free to reach
out to me with any questions. Best of luck to you and we look forward to
hearing your exciting news in the near future.

So, I have the benefit of memories and experiences from the first one, but the maturity of 17 years since my last dog. Hello. I think I might've seen you at Washington seminar. Geoff my fianc? and I were just there. If this is what it feels like to be an expectant parent, I'm all for it. The excitement of getting a dog is at best and most Happiest thing that's ever happened to me.

I think being an expectant parent may be a little higher on the scale. Like when you first rfeel those fluttery kicks, when you hear the heart beating for the first time ... Ah, that far outweighs the dog. But getting a dog kind of makes me think of Christmas, especially after you get to the school and are awaiting the introductions. Agh, I want to do it again!
LOL.

Oh, that was supposed to be "feel" not "rfeel." And Dan, of course you would

Hi everyone,

I just thought it's long past time I introduce myself. I've been subscribed
to the list for a few months, but just recently (in the oast couple days)
started following posts.

I am currently working my fourth dog from TSE. Igloo is a Golden/Lab cross.
He and I went through class together in May of 2013, the last class that was
held at the Dolce, while TSE's main facilities were undergoing rennovations.

Igloo and I now live in Lincoln, Nebraska where I work as an AT Instructor
at the Nebraska Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

And for those who are interested, I trained with my first dog in July '96,
right after graduating high school.

It's great to be here, and I am enjoying reading everyone's post. I welcome
your replies, and if you'd like, feel free to reply to me off list, so as
not to clutter everyone else's inbox. J

Well wishes to everyone on list, as well as their faithful four-legged
companions!

Kind regards,

Matt

Matt, hi, this is Cindy Ray. I think we met when you were at IDB last year
and Fisher growled and barked at your dog. CUTE! I hope All is going well
there. In future, put your E-mail address at the bottom of your messages
such that people can more easily correspond with you off list. It is so
good to have you're here.

Hi again everyone,

As Cindy pointed out to me, I did not specify my email address in my
previous post; I was pretty sure that, from other lists I've been a member
of, hitting Reply (instead of Reply all) would reply to the sender, and not
to the list, but that probably varies from list to list.

My email address is: matt.hackert at gmail.com

Have a great day!

Matt

Hi Cindy!

Yes, I do remember you and Fisher! How is everything going? I saw your most
recent couple messages, and the name never clicked. Thanks for the heads-up
about including my email address. I think if people just hit reply, it
should come to me off list, but that may vary, depending on how the list is
configured. Glad you found my address though.

Matt

Dear federation family and guide dog users,
One unfortunate inevitability is the loss of our loyal partner and companion. I found this article, and thought I would share it with you. I hope , for anyone experiencing such loss, that this article will be beneficial. Please also remember that most schools have social workers to help an individual though such a sad situation. Have a wonderful weekend! Be safe! Live the lives you want with your dog guide at your side!

Hi,

I remember the first time I received my dog and will agree that it is
like having a chield. I do hope that one day I will be able to get
another dog but rite now it is just not in the cards.

I applied to GEB last May and because of my work schedule and other things, we all decided to do home training. I just recently arrived home from attending the Washington seminar with many other Federationists and it was a lot of fun. If you go to National Convention this year, I hope to see you there. My girlfriend, best friend, and co-worker, Stacie is also on this list and also a guide dog user. We are very excited about my new dog soon and we are acting just like expecting parents. Earlier today we went shopping for the dogs and spent way more than we should have, but it was all worth it.

Yes, current rabies, usda vet certificate. I go to EU every year. The biggest issue is finding a usda vet. Even though it's not required, I always keep a frontline or equivalent and heart worm med log with me... just in case. Have fun in Ireland.

Does anyone have a copy of this document? I've read somewhere that only guides from ADI- or IGDF-accredited programs are recognized/allowed into most EU countries. If this is the case, where is it documented, and what proof is required?

Congratulations on the new dog! I agree with Cindy, it's more like
Christmas than having a child.

You can leave a dog in the house unattended while you stand in the yard and
talk to the neighbor for half an hour. You can put them in a crate if they
can't be supervised. Heck, you can attach a dog to a tie down to keep them
from getting underfoot at dinner. Dogs never talk back. You'll never get a
call from the school that your dog has had a bit of a shop project with some
calculators and now owes $30 for repairs to school property.

Dogs are not people. They think differently, act differently, get
information about the world differently and will never be a little person in
a fur coat. Always keep that in mind when working with a dog. If you
expect them to be human, you will probably end up being very disappointed.
