Right, and what about children, does this rabi say
you leave your baby alone because you have to carry it from point a to b?

Hi I am Jewish, I would ask that Rabbi what about some one who has glasses
and carries them from inside to outside. When a jewish person goes what does
he do does he not flush. Your guide dog is blessing he needs to be fed just
like you. With all these religion look at all the crap that goes on in this
world

How about not following the rules and using common sense?--smile I think
that would be a good idea. What about feeding your dog and so on on Shabbat?
I was brought up Jewish though thank Gosh I'm a non-believer now and I just
use my common sense to decide things, and lest I'm being accused of sarcasm,
I'm not being that way, I'm just wondering. I heard of guide dog user in
the northeast who was very very orthodox and she wouldn't feed her dog on
Shabbat and had someone else do it, now granted, as long as the dog ate
that's fine but I am wondering.

I'm thinking it'll be a little hard to plan your dogs relieving as dogs are
alive and they empty when they need to or when you take them out--smile

I wish you a wonderful journey in the guide dog world.

As far as the religious authority who rules you shouldn't use the cane
because you must carry it from inside to outside, , maybe he should try
being blind-folded every Sabbath and see how well he does without a cane.
Write me privately if you like I'm very curious how it's going for you and
though the tone of my note probably doesn't make that clear--smile I do
really wish you well I'm just outspoken.

I have expressed the same questions or reservations when blind Muslim
friends think of getting guide dogs or have them, and heoretically any
religion whatsoever or even lack of it--smile.

I bet the moderator won't be happy with me but oh wel, we've gone down that
path before.

Cordially,

Dan

So you are Orthodox Jew then? Some of the reformed, and I can't recall the
other one I'm thinking of, have relaxed some of that. That is all so
interesting to me.

Yes, according to most authorities I would be able to use the dog. The issue
at hand is that by strict Jewish law, it is forbidden to carry objects from
the outside in or from the inside out, or outside a distance of more than
approximately 6 feet. There are some authorities that allow the use of a
cane, but the rabbi that was asked on my behalf ruled against it, and my
understanding of the ruling makes me agree and adhere. A dog is not
carried, but moves on its own, and the harness is a garment rather than a
burden. One problem I have is with park bags, and certainly picking up
after them, so during that 24 hour period, I need to try to plan when the
dog empties, and otherwise let what happens happen. I also have to keep one
gentle leader in the synagogue to be used during the lunch after services,
rather than keep the main one in my pocket.
