Congratulations, Heather, on your new dog. And how simple it was to get her
uh him! You didn't even go for training. Wowzer.

Subject: [NAGDU] I Have a New Guide Dog Named Rex

So, apparently I have a brand new guide dog I knew nothing about. She’s just
like Ilsa in every single way, a German Shepherd, trained by the Seeing Eye
and everything. She even has the same heart-shaped marking on her forehead.
I was walking along when I heard a man trying to get a loose, off-leash dog
back into his yard. Sometimes with dog distraction issues I ignore it and
see what Ilsa will do, and praise or correct as needed. Most of the time I
warn her with some strong “leave it.”s and work past the dog distraction.
Once in a while I will place her at a sit stay and wait for the dog to pass,
or in this case, to be brought back under control. So I told her “Sit. Atta
girl. Rest. Rest. Good. Rest.” The man still trying to get his own dog
turned to Ilsa and said “Good girl Rex.” Most people expect to hear the word
stay not the Seeing Eye’s “rest” command, and the way I was talking to her
with commands and command reminders and praise, I guess he thought her name
was Rex, hearing “rest” as “rex.” So, apparently I have a new guide dog
named Rex. Geez, I am always the last to know. *laughing* He seemed really
impressed at how she was sitting there like a perfectly behaved statue while
his dog was running around us, and it would be hilarious if he were to call
the Seeing Eye to congratulate them on “This awesome German Shepherd of
yours in my neighborhood named Rex.” TSE would probably be thinking “Erm,
what now? What is this man going on about? Sounds like Heather and Ilsa’s
neck of the woods, but that must be some dog from another school, or this
man is a little strange.” He must have been thinking that Rex is a funny
name for a female dog, as it is the word for king in, Latin I think, some
language for sure, pretty sure that it is Latin. Well I’m a strait LGBT
ally, so I suppose if Ilsa wanted me to call her Rex I wouldn’t judge.
*smile* I found it amusing so I

Then they came for me, and by that time no one was left to speak up." -

In our diverse society we must never fail to speak up in the face of Human
