Hi Cindy.
Well, here’s the saga of my endeavor into training my own guide.
as you may recall, i had decided to get the no-tail-girl who was 5 months old.
well, that did not work out at all. she ended up not being socialized enough at all. she had been raised in a kennel situation and was definitely not concerned about pleasing this human at all. she had reactions to cars, mowers, etc. I had her for 1 week and, in that time i did get some basic obedience into her. Sit, down, and limited heeling.
so, back to the drawing board for me. i put my name on the list for a pup from the next litter. the breeder was willing to test the entire litter with the bolhard puppy temperament test at 7 weeks old and, they did perform the tests. I selected my pup based completely on the results of that test.
i now have a black male doberman who is just 14 weeks old.
he is coming along superb in the training department, but, we are working on some health issues, unfortunately.
so, just to give you an idea of what we are doing. he can sit, down, come, heel, and stay. the stay is still on a short leash but, he’s still very young. we are up to walking about 1.25 miles and he sits at all the curbs nearly all the time without me even prompting him with the sit command. he can walk by cars, trucks, dogs on leash across the street, dogs in backyards, people walking, lawn mowers.
he is 16 inches at the shoulders and aprox 25 pounds so far.
I did not go to convention this year as, i did not want to board him at this early stage. but, i’ll be there next year for sure.
o.o yeah, he is also just starting to lose his very sharp baby teeth. i found one on my floor just yesterday. good thing i have several chewy toys.

Take care;
Vivianna
