Hello Joe and list,
I have similar feelings to you on this matter. I started working dogs in 2008 at Guiding Eyes for the Blind. While treats were used corrections and prong collars were the norm. The dog was basically weened off of heavy treating prior to going home. When I returned in 2015 and subsequently 2016 treating practices at the school were similar but more verbal redirection was suggested in place of a leash correction as a first response. Once home however, field reps were focusing on treating. I attended the guide dog foundation in late 2016 and found their excellerated two week program to be very treat heavy and weening would happen at home over a six month timeframe. I am in the midst of this process and still have a treat driven dog that definitely is less confident if treats are not involved. This dog also seems to need constant encouragement. I wood be interested to here others perspectives on this topic as well.
