[NAGDU] Haircuts

When we went to Walmart yesterday, he had to deal with an employee yelling
at us because we went the wrong way in the employee's mind. To my surprise,
Alec handled the situation calmly and professionally by ignoring the yelling
person. We calmly and steadily walked into the store and up to the service
counter. In fact, Alec hit it dead on through the waiting line ropes. The
past few times, he overshot it by a few feet. Millions of praises for that
trip...:)

My second dog was worried about everything, so he jumped up every time
people came near. We did obedience in the lobby of the apartment  building I
was living in. One of the exercises we did was every person who came in I
would jumped up to shake their hand and explain to them how they were
helping me train my dog. When he lay still, lots of quiet praise. I did not
want him to break the down rest. Everyone was eager to help me with
training. A couple I asked to go back out as he got up and we tried it
again. So, yes sometimes John Q Public with help with training.

How do you deal with his leash? Alec is excited and hyper active when new
people come to visit. How do you keep him down while all this activity is
going on around him?

When I get a haircut, Krokus lies by my feet.  I have to be careful to
position him so he won't get hit if the hairdresser turns the chair.  Also,
in his puppy days he would try to eat the hair that fell, but he's grown out
of that, mostly.  Otherwise, it's the same as any other trip.

I guess you don't know the story about Morris Frank and the first Seeing Eye
dog.  He was in training, and he realized he needed a haircut.  He asked if
someone could take him to the barber, because that was what he'd always done
before, and the training director reminded him that now his dog would help
him get to the barber; all he needed from them was directions.  And Morris
realized he was free to do what he wanted, when he wanted, without waiting
for someone to be free to help him.
I know that moment myself.  I still rejoice in it, after all these years.
