Welcome Yiska!

We do talk about owner training on this list from time to time, but if you'd
like a place that's more focused I have a list for owner trainers. Send an
email to: julielj at neb.rr.com letting me know you'd like to join and the
email address you want to use and I'll add you.

To quickly answer your questions...it's highly doubtful that teaching
additional tasks will mess up the guide training, but it will depend
somewhat on what additional skills your training, the personality of your
dog and the dog's ability to take on additional responsibilities. Every dog
is different. Not every dog is cut out to be a guide and not every guide is
cut out to be multi task trained. That said, I think there's a good chance
you could teach a guide dog the tasks you mentioned.

Subject: [NAGDU] Mira guide dog school owner training multiple disabilities

Hello everyone,

I am in between guide dogs at the moment. I just recently had to retire my
dog Kori from the seeing eye due to a rapid eye skin pigment autoimmune
disease.

I have just been looking at various schools to somewhat ease the pain.
There is a school in canada that trains dogs called Mira. Has anyone heard
of them and can give feedback?

Also I am thinking about owner training in addition to guide work
additional tasks. I know that is not for this list but any idea where to
go? Will it interfere with guide work? I am thinking about deep pressure
therapy and some sound alerting tasks ie alarm clock and name. Thanks
Yiska
