[NAGDU] NAGDU Digest, Vol 156, Issue 21

Hey everyone,

I want to say something about our experience with heartworm and flea preventatives. This is about our experience, and if you find it helps you, great. This is not advice or the desire to start a forum. I just hope that if we’ve gained something that has helped us feel really a good about what we do for our dog health, (hey and ours too!),please feel free to find benefit.

We’ve had plenty of animals in our lifetimes with health issues. We just thought it was how it was. Now we are more careful about both feeding and chemical agents. We feed them species appropriate food so we don’t compromise their immune system lifelong. We’ve seen for example, our fair share of arthritis and diabetes from unknowingly feeding (essentially junk food) kibble in the distant past. We use super high end, organic now, and we pay over a hundred bucks a bag for it. And that’s just the backup grazing food. We’d spend it anyway on a broken down or prematurely dying dog, we’ve found, in vet bills in the end. So we choose to live large...and longer.

Ok, a spooky little paragraph here. It’s about us too. I mean, think about this. I remember as a kid, happily hanging out in they yard while my dad pumped pesticide dust onto the shrubs with a little foot-long piston hand pumper, poured snail poison under them, and sprayed Malathion all over the giant citrus trees in the yard perimeter with a hose mounted canister sprayer. I, and my dogs Honey and Brandy played there. Honey lived longer. Our beagle Brandy got seizures, went blind, and died early. We’ll never know exactly why. Then later I read Rachael Carson’s Silent Spring, and looked at research on what chemicals can do. Well, there was one thing. Carson cited how some chemicals, one in particular, were documented to destroy the neurology of beagles in laboratories. That’s the one my dad regularly sprayed with from the hose, and the same one that the Governor mandated, that helicopters carpet-sprayed over L.A. and our neighborhood to kill a bug. So out of heartache we’ve had reasons to look at things circumspectly.

We’ve also learned to be open to what is appropriate for our dogs in terms of sufficient vaccination and preventatives. There is plenty of veterinary input by now about the usefulness of blood titer tests, which can show if antibody immunity is still sufficient from the last booster. We prefer not to overload the immune system, which is now coming out in research to be something we really don’t want in our family. In our case, we’ve had that vet confirmed, and except rabies, which is mandatory, we only boost others when blood tests say we actually need it unless we live or will be going to a higher risk area. Titers cost more than just another shot, but it is well worth it to us for the long-term health reasons above.

Depending on the vet, whether their bias is more toward evaluating by case, or the other extreme of hard line or marketing, they will tell you in conversation what they think is actually necessary for heart worm prevention. We have found that these conversations on whether our dogs need much preventative or not can be had, and that they overlap with maps of where the dog resides and whether it is a higher risk area or not for the dose they determine.

We *do* give our dogs heart worm preventative. However, we have been advised that what was considered “normal” in our case, was double what we now happily give them. And when we are going down to see my folks in L.A., in a pocket known for heavy heart worm, we definitely make sure they are fully treated. It’s about reality and being reasonable.

Dr. Becker is a great source for information and looking at both sides of issues. She’s a vet, but she questions everything. But as can happen anywhere, we find that it’s best for us to take about a quarter of her articles to heart. Anyone on a mission can get extreme. But she is a vet and perhaps a rare voice, and we really appreciate her overview - and frankly her bias too. She’s worth joining by email.

Here’s an article on heart worm from her. Sorry, I don’t know how to make it an active link. It has to be highlighted and pasted into a browser:

https://healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/archive/2017/04/03/heartworm-preventive-drugs.aspx?utm_source=petsnl&utm_medium=email&utm_content=artTestHP_A4&utm_campaign=20170324Z1&et_cid=DM136937&et_rid=1940042888

The other thing I’ll mention is flea and tick preventatives. We discovered that they affect both my wife and me in the respiratory system. We’re healthy and in shape. We don’t eat restricted or allergic type diets. Except cats in my case, no allergies to stuff. We’re both robustly healthy. But either of us can walk into a room where a dog has been on a flea preventative, and both start wheezing, with other allergic type “emergency” reactions. There is by now plenty of information out there that there are chemicals which can be harmful to humans, and harmful (or worse) to dogs.

Here’s the down side we’ve found about our own not using flea preventatives. With the fires here in Sonoma County CA, animals traveled out of home territory to us, bringing fleas and ticks. It’s easy to put a drop on a dog or feed a pill, but we don't do it. But instead, we flea comb, drive a vacuum, and we put both brewers’s yeast and one to two fresh squeezed garlic clove into a stock container that holds about half a gallon. We mix it up, and fill the food bowl from it. A scant dribble of olive oil helps it stick to the food, when mixed up like we would a salad. Only a clove or two per about half gallon of food though, to keep from making stomach upset. They love it. We catch them “mining” the food bowl often for it. And it really does help deter. There is also cedar oil spray, which fleas detest. Dude, that’s work. Or it can be expensive to have someone else do it. But we’re all really healthy with our states of health, and hope its for a significantly longer time than the old alternatives. Does it kill fleas? No. Is it as effective? Probably not. But we’ve known people whose dogs were flea bitten…and then I guess they died and dropped off. So hey, nothing’s perfect… the little “work habit” of maintaining flea free environment as we do it is worth it to us.

Again, this is what we’ve found, and what we do. If anything here inspires or helps any of you, great. I just love our dogs so much, that if anything about what we have found and do might be of any help for you, I’d feel great about that. If you really prefer the chemical route, or because of circumstance find you have to, I’ll still love ya.

Best wishes all,
Peter

Whether 5K walks/runs, cycling adventures, you name it. She does wonderfully well at all these events, it does probably depend on the dog, but I feel as though you would be just fine having your husband take his guide dog.

> The short answer to the question if dogs can run at a fast speed and long distances is... it depends.Just like with people, a dog will need to build up endurance to guide-run that distance. I chose to run with my dog because she was already trying to pull me along everywhere, so I figured I could channel her speed into my desire to run with her. Best decision I ever made as a handler. That being said, not all dogs are cut out to run fast (and "fast" is a relative term, anyway). Depending on your speed and how quick your dog's regular guiding movements are, it may or may not be a good decision.I'd be happy to discuss further. :, because this post is plenty long...)As to the original question, a few things I've learned about 5K run/walks:1) They are usually dog-friendly, so heads-up for dog distractions if that's a thing for your guide.2) If you're used to walking long distances, a 5K walk - even in a big group - should be fine.3) I've always gone with friends, and that tends to keep the freakouts about blindness to a minimum.
