[NAGDU] Lyft

Cindy,
Someone told me we have Uber and the ap no longer tells me sorry no service
in your area. However every time I check it tells me there are no cars
available. Still, I'm hopeful I'll get to use it one of these days. I
don't actually know that there are 2 drivers, but whatever number it is, it
isn't very many. Also it is quite possible that the drivers would
recognize my name and know I am that blind lady. The joy of being the only
blind person in a small town.

Mike,

I am not suggesting that I wouldn't pursue filing a complaint, I am simply
stating that I do not have the luxury of waiting for a driver who is okay
with the dog, as some others have suggested they are willing to do. Even if
I had hundreds of drivers available, I still don't agree with the idea of
giving anyone a pass on following the law.

You asked what I have to lose, if the very limited driver pool goes away
because they refuse to follow the rules. True I have no more or less
transportation options as I had before, but I have lost an opportunity. I
also run the risk of making my life even more complicated. Remember this is
a small, small town and everyone knows everyone. I'd like to avoid being
the cause of getting someone fired if I can at all help it. There are
serious social consequences for that sort of thing.

We do have to think of all the possible possibilities; yet we also have to
try it to see what will happen. The majority of drivers do not refuse the
dog. If you are going to use Uber, you would have to find a back up plan for
the possibility I think, but once you have ridden with both of the drivers,
it seems it would work out. Trust me, I am not in a position to say that for
sure. I am surprised that Uber has come there. It will be interesting to see
how it all works out.

To those who don't mind about announcing ahead of time you have a dog,
losing a driver, or waiting for the next one who is willing to take your
dog.

I live in a very small town, about 8,000 people. We recently got Uber here.
Huge cheers! I have been waiting a long, long time for this. However,
because of the small size of my town, there aren't very many drivers. Many
times when I check there are no cars at all available. That is a problem
all by itself, but what if the two drivers we do have decide they don't want
to take my guide dog? I can't just wait for the next car. I can't afford
any access denials. It doesn't matter so much if my dog is in my profile,
it's going to be obvious at least after the first trip anyway, but what
happens if they stop taking my ride requests because they know I have a dog?
I'm stranded and Uber will be useless to me.

I do not have the luxury of anonymity here. I need the drivers to abide by
the law every single time, no exceptions. So far I have not used Uber,
partly because there haven't been drivers when I wanted and partly because I
am afraid that even if I get the first ride I will be stranded for the
return trip.

I know that sometimes we think only about where we live, our situation and
our preferences, but I think it's important, especially when dealing with
issues of legal enforcement, to think bigger.

Personally, I would rather the first car that takes my ride be my ride.
I would rather not waste time with a driver that finds out I have a dog,
then chooses to cancel.
When I used to order taxis, I would give them that information, b/c it took
too long to get another taxi.
I would just as soon not give my business to someone who is reluctant to
take my dog.
Thankfully, there are enough Uber and Lyft drivers on the road in my area
that it doesn't matter.

No, I don't think we are saying this at all. Most of the time drivers will
discover we have dogs and will not take the call. That is the only way they
could get away with it. If they take the drive and then, discovering you
have a dog, they cancel, that they aren't to do. It would seem to me
personally to be a problem that they have a secret profile that tells them
we have a dog. I don't know what the ramifications to that would be. We'll
have to see later on, but we are still involved with plotting how the
settlement is going.
