There's currently an outbreak of canine influenza on the West Coast, and if this year is anything like last year, it's going to erupt in most parts of the country. Because the virus is airborne, dogs in animal shelters or who go to places where there are lots of other dogs, like dog parks and dog shows, are at particular risk.

Because canine influenza (CIV) is a new disease, many people aren't quite sure what to make of it. Is it serious, even life-threatening? Should they consider a vaccination for the disease? If so, which one and how frequently do they need it?

The first place to get answers is from your veterinarian. She can tell you if there's any CIV in your area, and what your options for prevention are. There are vaccines for both identified strains of CIV, and for most dogs they protect them from the worst symptoms and reduce the time they're contagious to other dogs.

Here's some additional information:

Just as with humans, dogs can get respiratory infections of various kinds, and usually they're not serious. However, canine influenza is more likely than other causes to turn into pneumonia, which can be fatal. Puppies and seniors are at highest risk, as are the brachycephalic ("flat-faced") breeds like Pugs and Bulldogs. And of course, dogs with other underlying health problems may also be at increased risk.

There are diagnostic tests available for both CIV strains, known as H3N8 and H3N2.

If you have a dog with respiratory symptoms who you want to take to the vet, ask them how you can protect other dogs in the waiting area from being infected by your pet. Many clinics will ask you to wait in your car or come in through a different door, bypassing the waiting area entirely. Be sure to also ask how long your dog needs to be kept away from other dogs, as CIV is extremely contagious between dogs.
