[NAGDU] trimming a guide dog's nails

I've never learned anything about nail trimming at guide dog school. When I
started doing it, I got advice from a blind friend.
I use the Dremmel. I bought the plug-in model from Amazon. I think it's
called Dremmel pet nail grinder. I saw several reviews from professional
groomers.
It doesn't have a guard of any sort. I have to be careful with the speed
setting, because it can go very high, which makes a big noise and makes the
nail very hot.
I've been using a Dremmel since the late '90's, and have never hurt my dog.
I do it every week, so the nails don't get long and it only takes a few
minutes.

I have known several sighted people who use a clipper, and it seems to me
they are as apt to cut the quick as a blind person is. They all seem to
have done it occasionally. That's why I prefer the Dremmel. It takes a bit
longer, but I've never made the dog yelp or bleed.

Subject: [NAGDU] trimming a guide dog's nails

Hi all,
I was just wondering, do guide dog schools teach handlers how to trim their
guide dogs nails? If so, how do they teach handlers where the quick is so
that you don't cut your dog's nails too short? The reason that I'm asking is
because as some of you may know I am hoping to become a professional dog
groomer and I'm wondering if there's some way for a totally blind person
like me to know where the quick is so that I don't accidentally cut a poor
dog's nails too short. I'd really hate to do that. Look forward to hearing
back from you guys!! Have a good weekend!! Thanks
Madison
