[NAGDU] Problem with Apartment Management

Jordan,

Many people are confused about the differences between the Fair
Housing Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act; likewise, many housing
accommodations are unaware of their responsibilities, too! The regulations
for each are very different. I think it is important to know that, according
to the regulations of the Fair Housing Act, it is up to the individual
requesting a reasonable accommodation to the "No Pets" policies to begin the
process by making a formal request for a reasonable accommodation. It is
then up to the housing accommodation to request what they need to grant the
accommodation. Sometimes it is as simple as an attestation from you and
sometimes it is more involved, requiring documentation of the need for the
accommodation and how the animal mitigates the disability. At this point, a
copy of your identification card should be all that is needed. Once this
requirement is met, the housing accommodation must grant the reasonable
accommodation unless they can demonstrate that granting the request would
either pose a direct threat or cause an undue burden.

I have attached a document that might help you resolve this issue. I
would encourage you to be kind and help them understand their
responsibilities, as anything else tends to create barriers to effective
communication rather than resolve the issue. HTH!

Fraternally yours,
Marion

characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise
expectations because low expectations create barriers between blind people

you back.

Subject: [NAGDU] Problem with Apartment Management

Okay, here we go again with Apartment Management problems. For some reason,
my apartment management is trying to tell my girlfriend she cannot move in
with me because she has a guide dog,and they only allow one pet per
apartment. Well, since my dog is a guide dog, and her dog is aguide dog,
this should not be a problem, and I have already discussed this with them
once and made it clear that my dog is a guide dog and so is hers.
