Hello friends,

I have noticed over the years that there is a regular interval of dog food inquiries. This is punctuated with news about dog food companies doing recalls. I just want to let you all know that we have done an absolute ton of research over the years on dog food.

I'm going to write to share what we have learned with you and please understand that it contains my personal biases, I want to make sure to say that upfront. It is not an opinion piece, it comes from how deeply we love Metukah and Kira, and how we are doing everything that we can to make sure they live the longest most beautiful healthy lifestyle they can. . That is what is motivating me writing this message. If there's anything in this that touches your heart to do the best you can as well beyond what you also have so far learned for your dogs best health, like we keep continually learning as well, that would be wonderful.

We learned long ago how feeding our own (human) bodies healthy foods, less junk to almost no junk, results in better health overall. For years, pretty much everything we ingest is organic. Organic is a funny term, as if it should be identified as something different, or special. It is not. It is simply foods that or not loaded with crap like insecticides, or genetically modified foods which may or may not be recognized by our bodies' DNA as digestible without some kind of complication resulting over an unknown course of our life’s time span. I joke sometimes, but actually this is not a joke… There should be two signs posted on stores grocery store Windows: "We have food, and, we also have genetically modified and pesticide laced food as well. “ Obviously the same Health concerns would be true for animals. My dogs do not eat diets filled with canine indigestibles such as corn, soy, bad oils, or byproducts and other ground-up meals, some of which have been documented to come from animals which were judged as sick or not safe to be passed and packaged as food.

I wrote earlier about the need to check labels regularly, because once a company that makes clean dog food has been sold, ingredients can begin to change. The best food that we have found these past years now, for kibble, has been from Open Farm. It is not cheap. But when dogs break down from having eaten a diet containing unsuitable ingredients during their lifetime, or losing an animal early because of it, it is so sad, and doubly so because we thought it to be normal. We know this one intimately. We've lost one from diabetes, which was traced to her commercial diet. That was how we learned, by losing one of our dear ones.

Dogs are descendents of wolves. They're carnivores. Fresh meat carnivores. This is how we feed Kira and Metukah. They get fresh meat daily. They are physiologically happy, and satisfied. The kibble is out all day and all night. They self regulate, and never overheat. They're not fat or otherwise out of shape. And exercise of course. I left that out. I won't talk about it here. Dogs simply need it.

Every one or two months, we rotate to a different kind of meat… Chicken, liver, beef, lamb, Turkey, etc.. Variety also exists in nature. We are simply respecting the genetics and natural metabolic function of the dogs. As a result, they're strong, bright, present… with smooth bright coats, perfectly sweet breath, great stamina, and they don't get sick. I believe that compared to the earlier dogs in my life, we will be blessed with many more years of health. This can seem expensive… It is! And a little more work for us, cutting little pieces of meat daily from freezer to fridge, to a pair of scissors over a plate. But we have found it a great alternative to premature visits to the vet for a prematurely sick broken down dog who is dealing with metabolic, arthritic, autoimmune, or other disorders which can be traced to a regular diet of food substandard to their genetic makeup. Think of the cost, more cost, in the long run. Clean, fresh food is not cheap. But how about Including the heartbreak of a compromised dog, and or when she may retire or die earlier than it should.

Karen Becker DVM has written many good articles on diet if you would like some science outside of the canned and kibbled mainstream. I don’t agree with everything she says about all subjects, but in these contexts of respecting an animal’s physical makeup, metabolism and physiology in foods, she’s got her feet on the ground.

I just wanted you to know what we have found, which has worked the best for us, for health. The proof is in the dogs… And us too!

Best wishes, Peter
