[NAGDU] home training

Hello Richard,

You are not making a pest of yourself, these topics are interesting and I
like to know others thoughts.

There is no right or wrong when it comes to home training. I'm not part of
the school you mentioned but after having done home training twice, I
would not want to go back to in-house training again. That is to say if
"at home training" is offered.

I don't want to have to become some persons best friend for a couple of
weeks while in class, you know that person you wouldn't ever bother with
on the outside world and yet unfortunately you happened to get stuck with
them in a class.

When training from home, I know my environment, it is an area that I
normally work, not somewhere that I won't work again for another 10
years, or until I need my next dog. I feel me knowing my area gives me an
advantage and it helps us bond because the dog seems to understand sooner
I'm the leader of the pack.

Training can be completed much faster with home training, the dog can
start settling in from day one.

A tip I would offer is if you were to do at home training, be organized
well in advance, have some meals prepared ready to go for the first couple
of days. The time spent cooking is time away from the dog. I generally
spend much of the weekend before training starts preparing meals.

An advantage of in-house training over home training could be the peer
support you might get from staying with other students. I don't need that,
I need to knuckle down and get training finished as soon as I can, and
don't need the new instant best friend.

I look forward to others comments and and any questions you might have.

Cheers.

Brent.

While I'm making a pest of myself, I've occasionally thought that home
training might be worth investigating next time. A number of people
locally
have received dogs from freedom guide dogs and are very happy. Wondering
if
anyone the list has used freedom and how things worked out both good and
bad? Feel free to reply off list if you prefer at

Thanks

Richard
