[NAGDU] Guide dogs, job, ADA law

Hi Amy,
I have worked in food service in the pre ADA times. One place I worked was
in a place where there was an open closet next to their kitchen. I had a
very mellow lab who stayed put without trying to come to me in the
kitchen. I also worked in another place without any place for a dog except
for a closet down the public hallway which had a door that we kept locked.
Fortunately, I didnt have a dog then so no problem. If I had a dog, I would
have to leave it home while I was at work. Or I wouldn't have applied for
that job.

I dont know any guide dog users who work food service and bring their dogs.
These places I worked at were Blind Vendors. Really, a kitchen with food
prep is no place for a dog to be. It is hot, greasy work. There are places
- or were - that sell only stuff prepackaged out of vending machines,
drinks out of machines, newspapers, magazines, cigarettes, etc.

Personally, I would choose this kind of work while I was a cane user. If
anyone on this list works food service and has a working guide, I would
like to know how it is managed. That is if you have an open-minded
employer. Maybe things are different nowadays. :)
