Hello everyone:
I want to clear the air on my statements regarding the below article. In know way was I trying to minimize Ms. Keller's contributions to the Death/Blind community. What I was referring to in my comments, was from a historical perspective. Where we were then and we are now. Yes, we have made strides in many areas, but the misconceptions surrounding persons who are Blind still permeate our space. Especially with dealing with the general public. Ask yourselves, how many of our able-bodied counterparts are grabbed on the street while crossing that very street. This is just one example of people thinking that we need to be handled. Now, I will admit, that this topic is probably not suited for a Guide Dog list being that it dives deeper into the historical ramifications that still plaque the Blindness Culture. Now, like I have previously stated, I will respect list rules.

Hi, Tina,
I felt your response was a bit snarky. If you think about it, Helen Keller’s contributions for her time were monumental. It is because of her that the situation began to change for deaf-blind people in particular. She was brilliant, though like Reginald White, she certainly wouldn’t have had the opportunity to do the things she did without a lot of help. But she did use her abilities to put deaf-blind people on the map, so to speak. ICanConnect is a part od they center that is at least named for her. New thinking came into being because of her. I have been one to get weary of being compared with her, but for a fact she was a large person in the history of especially deaf-blind people. There are a lot of those on the list, and I really think a not-too-friendly thread could start as a result of snarky comments. You are probably right that it wouldn’t be unreasonable to mention her so long as the thread didn’t deteriorate into a discussion of whether Helen Keller was worth it.
Thanks.
Cindy
