[NAGDU] choosing schools

Hi Madison,

I don't think that you are wrong to consider these issues, especially those
related to similar weather conditions. You might want to ask to come to
school during the time of year which has the type of weather you are most
concerned about working your dog in. As far as dietary considerations, I
know at The Seeing Eye there are several choices for each meal. As I recall,
they would have, for example, a cold cereal option for breakfast and PB&J
sandwich. Also, they always had boiled eggs on hand and you could always
specify different types of eggs than were on the menu. I'm not a picky eater
but I noticed that people could, for the most part, find something to eat.

in my experience with one school, they can accommodate up to a point. For
instance, I loathe eggs and will not eat them. Usually, after a few
mornings, the kitchen staff realized this and stopped bringing me eggs for
breakfast. That was GDB, and now, I believe they have multiple options for
meals. I don't think it's realistic to ask the chef to fix you something
completely different, like say a cheese burger when chicken is on the menu,
but there are choices. My current dog is from guiding eyes, but I had home
training, so I didn't have to worry about what they do regarding meals.

And yes, people do choose to go to a school where they might have similar
weather to what they have at home. I even remember from when I worked at GDB
in the 2000s, we would have people request a dog that was raised around
snow, though that couldn't be guaranteed. Of course, GDB California campus
doesn't generally get snow any time of year, but their Oregon campus might.
Otherwise, you'd want one of the eastern or midwest schools.

Hi all,
I know I haven't started applying and I don't know when I will but I'm going
to ask these questions anyway. I'm a very picky eater and it's not because
of religion/allergies/diatary restrictions it's just the way I am; I know
that schools have to accommodate it if you have a specific reason but since
it's just the way I am would they still have to accommodate me/do you think
they'd be willing to do so? Also, would it be wrong/weird to pick a school
based on what the weather tends to be like (I don't mean during training I
mean what type of weather the dog was trained in)? Our winters get really
cold and we tend to get lots of snow and while I get that no one likes going
out in the freezing cold and snow I would want to know that I'd be getting a
dog that can handle that type of conditions just the same as I'd think
someone who lives somewhere that gets a lot of rain/storms would want to
know that their dog would be able to handle it. Look forward to reading any
thoughts that anyone has!! Thanks Madison
