I have, or had, this one. It's expensive, but very good and powerful. Now my house has mostly hard wood floors, so I gave this to a friend of mine and got something else. I have house cleaners and they use their pro vacuum to take care of the bedrooms, the only place with carpet here. But this vacuum is fantastic on dog hair.

We have owned a Dyson in the past and found that it didn't do as well as we would have liked. We now have a Shark. It works pretty well but it really depends on several things. In my opinion nothing works well with a plush or deep pile carpeting in terms of vacuuming up dog hair of any length or texture. We live in the Portland Oregon area where fewer people have grass lawns. We have a fine mulch on the ground which work swell but does get carried in on shoes and dog coats. I will take a clothes brush and brush the rug periodically and then vacuum afterwards. I also make sure that I empty the "cup" (my word) of hair and lint frequently. We also clean the rollers and brushes to ensure that we remove long strands of hair and other fibers from the brushes to ensure better suction. My husband used to laugh and say that the one good thing about having  dog is that there isn't any danger of anyone getting injured when they fall in the house. At one point we had one short-haired cat, one long-hair cat and one golden retriever. We brush both cats regularly  and I brushed my golden daily--getting a large handful of hair out of his coat daily. Still we had to vacuum and picked up quite a bit of hair daily. We had an area rug in the living room, small rugs in front of outside doors, in front of the kitchen sink, and in all of our bathrooms.
The area rug in our living room was carpeting which I shampoo with a foam product. All of the others were tossed in the washing machine. I also use the lint rollers on our living room furniture to catch any hair. My dog guides, much to their disappointment, are not allowed to get on the living room furniture or the beds. I've had dogs now for more than 40 years. I got in the pattern when our daughter was young. She has allergies to dog and cat hair as well as dust and dust mites. So WE developed a routine which, though sounds overwhelming works very well and results in a clean house. I will say that I won't have carpeted stairs again. WE had a house with over 70 steps inside and vacuuming all of them manually. I was a fulltime employee, going to school at night, and our two children were in middle school. I hired someone to come in every two weeks to clean the house and it was worth it.

We will be moving into a new house this weekend. There will be a piece of are carpeting in our living room area and area rugs in front of outside doors, in front of the kitchen sink, and in the bathroom. The area rugs will all be machine washable. The other rules in terms of furniture still apply and will do so in our new home.

To me, dog hair is part of using a dog. You can't avoid it all but you can minimize it and make it all worth while. Don't over stress. Enjoy your dog.
It sounds like your doing better than many dog owners--dog guides or not--regularly do.

Several years ago I bought the Dyson Pet vacuum from QVC.  It is an upright bagless vacuum.  It still works fine, and picks up lots of hair every time.

I've seen it on QVC lately for something between $300-400, but mine has lasted a long time, so I figure it was worth the investment.

Hi folks,
I have a lab and I groom her outdoors every day.
And I have a Dysan stick vacuum which I love, but it's not the greatest for dog hair on carpet. It sucks it up but sometimes the fur clumps get stuck.
We will eventually replace the carpet, but in the meantime, what do you use to vacuum up dog hair. I've seen the dog fur vacuums on amazon, but they all seem to come with a lot of other stuff for grooming. Are those vacuums worth the expense?
Any suggestions?
