[NAGDU] Hypoallergenic dog guide, where can I get one?

Hi Tara,

Guide Dogs of the Desert in California trains standard poodles. In addition, I just received my fourth guide dog, a standard poodle from Gallant Hearts in Mississippi. Gallant Hearts is a small school and only provides home training. They have several breeds, Dobermanns, German Shepherds, British cream retrievers and some standard poodles.

First, how severe are your child's allergies? My daughter had allergies to the dander but keeping things well vacuumed, the dog very clean and brushed outside, not allowing the dog to go into the room where my daughter slept and having no rugs was all that I needed to do. BTW, get covers for your child's pillows and matrass and wiping them regularly helps. Also, tossing all stuffed animals and pillows into the drier on a medium high heat for a ten minute spin will kill dust and dust mites. Putting washable seat covers on your automobile seats and floor protecters on the floor in your automobiles that can be hosed off regularly reduces a lot of the offending dander and hair. I wouldn't move to a poodle immediately if I were you. You need to confirm what specifically affects your child and how introduction of that irritant can be minimized. My daughter still has a dog and cats in her house and she has outgrown her allergies. She has asthma, but neither the dog which lives in her house or my dog guide visiting her has any effect. It's not true that poodles don't have any dander and that no one is allergic to them.

I fortunately don't have any allergy issues.  I don't know where  you are located but if you are on the east coast freedom guide dogs issues many dogs that are intended for people with allergy issues.  They only do home  training and because it is a small school they generally limit themselves to the east coast.

Hi all! I recently received some bloodwork on one of my children. The blood work tested for various allergies and I was confirmed in my understanding that my child has scored high on being allergic to dogs. Currently, I am working with an eight-year-old black lab from the Seeing Eye. Have any of you experienced anything like this and what did you do? Are there schools that train poodles or the poodle mixed breeds? Any information would be greatly appreciated!
