[NAGDU] off leash recall

I play hide and seek with my dog to continually work on recall. I have a yard, and sometime, when she's having fun out there, she might be a little slow to come, though she always does in the end. So, from time to time, I play hide and seek. My house is great for this. I'll have her sit and stay somewhere, walk away, starting close and calling her. She gets one kibble when she touches my fist. Then I'll have her sit again and go to a different room. Call and reward when she comes again. I change it up and eventually am at one end of the house with my dog on the other end. I might do five rounds of hide and seek like this, so five kibble rewards. Of course each time, she gets lots of praise and hugs too. Food rewards should augment, not replace verbal and physical praise. My dog loves hide and seek, thinks it's the most fun game ever.

Hi Richard. My retired guide is like this too. She's very selective about her recall and comes when she feels like it. Lol What I do when I practice it with her is I put her on a sit stay. And I walk away a few stops. I have the kibble in my pocket well hidden I don't give her the kibble until she comes and does a touch. That means she touches my fist with her nose. Then she gets the kibble. I think the key though for us is having her do that sit stay until asking her to come. Do this a few times. Gradually walk further and further away from her. Keep the sessions short Hope this helps.
