I take my dog’s harness off when going through the metal detector to avoid possible alarms. I put his metal-free 6ft leash (that I picked up at an NFB convention a few years ago) on before going through TSA, tell him to sit, then hold it in one hand while I hold out my other hand in front of me so the TSA person can take it and guide me through the center of the detector. I then call my dog and he comes through.
I use a Dean and Tyler nylon harness now that Julie no longer makes hers. It is comfortable for my dog and for me, though it takes getting used to holding a rounded handle. I’ll paste the link, but keep in mind that you should definitely get the shorter 16 inch handle – the 20 inch will be too long no matter how large your dog is.

That harness doesn’t have much metal, but its still enough to set off the detectors at federal buildings.
As for a DIY leash solution, you could pretty easily make a metal-free leash using paracord and some plastic swivel clasps or carabiners, which you can get on Amazon or at REI.
Hope all of that is helpful.

Every time we go through TSA security it sets off the metal detectors. Of course, this means a step to the side, pat down of the dog, and then hand swabbing. I travel all the time through airports so. I would like one that does not set off the metal detectors. That doesn’t necessarily mean a metal free harness, just one that is minimal in metal. I think the ones from jewlie Johnson worked for this, but she’s no longer making them. I have found one supplier of guide dog harnesses that has a plastic handle that you can purchase separately From the leather or nylon harness, but the site looks a little sketchy,. I’d also like this harness to double as an all weather/water play harness so nylon is best, or some other material like that. I know our leather harnesses are heavy duty and great for withstanding anything and everything, but they don’t dry out very quickly when they’ve gotten wet, so I avoid him wearing it when, we’re gonna be getting soaked. Also, would like a detachable handle, again for travel purposes. Would love to just pop the handle off when colonel goes under the seat. I’m really wanting to look at a couple of options before I just scrap the search and , make one myself. Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome. and if you have other advice about getting through security without sounding a national alarm that you could be a terrorist just because you have a guy dog, I’d appreciate it.
