Please see notes below to determine if this is a study you can participate in as it is going on in Greenbelt. Participants must be over 18 and totally blind and of course have some mobility skills.

I expect some of your members will meet the criteria to participate; I hope so, anyway. Here's the full recruiting message, that seemed to be cut off in the mail below:

I'm working with the Institute for Transportation Research and Education at North Carolina State University (NCSU) on a research study on channelized turn lanes (slip lanes) and roundabouts. The purpose of this study is to evaluate different treatments (raised crosswalks, different types of signals) that may increase yielding by vehicles and improve the ability of individuals who are blind or visually impaired to cross at these locations. We'll be in Greenbelt Maryland from approximately September 8 - 11 and need 6 to 8 participants who meet the criteria for the study.

In order to participate, individuals need to be over 18 years old, totally blind (no more than light perception), cane users, or dog guide users who are willing to use a cane when participating in the study, and must cross streets at least once a week.

Participants will be asked to indicate when they would cross the street at several different roundabout or channelized turn lane crossings a number of times. They will be accompanied by an orientation and mobility specialist (me, Janet Barlow) as they are standing close to the street and will be videotaped as they make decisions, so researchers can study the decisions and traffic conditions later. They will also be asked to find the crosswalk a few times for the 'wayfinding' aspect of the research.

Each participant will be scheduled individually for the research. Participation will require approximately two to three hours and will be scheduled in the daytime during the week. Each participant will be paid $50 for their participation and their transportation costs will be reimbursed. This study has been approved by the Institutional Review Board of NCSU. We will provide some orientation to the intersection before the research trials begin. If you meet the criteria above and are interested in more information, please email me at jmbarlow at accessforblind.org <mailto:jmbarlow at accessforblind.org> or call me at 770-317-0611 <tel:770-317-0611> .
