June 2021
A Service of the Technology User Group
at the Maryland State Library for the Blind and Print Disabled

Feel free to share this newsletter

Audiobook Radio Network

The United Kingdom has an intriguing audio service called Audiobook
Radio. This service plays a mixture of audiobook content with modern
day radio dramas. You can access the service by going to
www.audiobookradio.net and clicking the “Listen Now” option, or you
can ask Siri or Google Home to play it. Victor Reader Stream users
can also stream this product through the Internet radio option.

What is Amazon Prime?

If you ask people “What is Amazon Prime?” most would respond, “It is a
delivery service from Amazon through which you can receive purchased
items in two days.” The truth is, Amazon Prime encompasses so much
more than this. Within the Prime service, many components can be
found, such as Prime Books, Prime Music, Prime Video, Prime Games, and
the list goes on. Many of these work with Alexa (the personal
assistant). At 10 AM on June 12th, the Technology User Group at the
Maryland State Library for the Blind and Print Disabled will go over
these services and discuss what you need to do to enjoy them.
To join us, simply call (319) 527-4994.

Clew

Clew is a breadcrumb navigation app that helps you navigate from Point
B to Point A. Let’s say you are in a supermarket and need assistance
finding the pharmacy counter. As someone helps you from the front
door to the counter, you turn Clew on and it will keep track of the
twists, turns, steps, etc. so that once you reach your destination, an
audible map is available to help you retrace your path back to the
front door. The app is free and a podcast of the app in action can be
found here:

What is the “cloud”?

The “cloud” is a network of servers that are located in a different
location from your system. These servers store information that you
want to keep and have access to later. Even if your computer or phone
is destroyed, you can gain access to the data. Many individuals use
the cloud to back up software, pictures, important documents, music
and more. Many cloud services charge a fee for storing this
information for you. Others offer a small amount of storage free with
premium options.

Two-finger Scrub

The two-finger scrub gesture is used to dismiss an alert or go back
one screen. Take two fingers and rub them on the screen quickly as if
you are trying to remove a stain.

iPhone Gets a Boost from iOS 14.5

With the upgrade to iOS 14.5 (the operating system within Apple
phones), you can now easily change Siri voices, ask to play music from
specific streaming services such as Pandora and Spotify, and choose
your own mail client. While 14.5 works on older phone models, such as
the original SE and the 6 series phones, rumor has it that in
September when iOS 15 is released, these models will be excluded.

Skill Building

What separates the Alexa AI from other personal assistants is the
ability to add skills just by using your voice. Simply ask Alexa
“What are your skills for cooking?” or “What are your radio skills?”
and she will tell you the name of the skill and ask you if you wish to
enable it. With hundreds of thousands of skills to choose from, you
are sure to find one that will enrich your life.
