Where does this come from? I know as far back as the 1980’s, those in the know advised that my resume needed to be focused to the specific employer and to the specific job I want with that employer.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:8.0pt;color:#1F497D'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='color:#1F497D'>And the same with the cover letter! Addressing a cover letter to “To Whom It May Concern” or “Dear Sir of Madame” really is an insult to both the recipient of the resume and cover letter and to my “smarts” in job search. These two recommendations do a lot to put me behind the eight ball. The recipients know that I am not doing any research, and hope that he or she will do the counseling and figure out what I can do for their employer and then take the necessary action.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:8.0pt;color:#1F497D'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='color:#1F497D'>When I send my cover letter and resume “To Whom It May Concern” or “Dear Sir or Madam” it goes to the HR department and often to an individual who is responsible for receiving such mail. Very seldom is that individual someone knowledgeable of what the specifics of the company are, what the requirements are for all the jobs the company has. More to the point, the company does not take the time or effort to help that individual become sufficiently knowledgeable about their company that they can do a really quality or effective job of what I am asking them to do. Soooooo … where does my hard work go? Recycle bin most likely. Now I have wasted time, mostly mine, in doing something that if anything moves me backwards in terms of my efforts to secure my next position.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:8.0pt;color:#1F497D'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='color:#1F497D'>My bottom line here is to remember that every document I use in my job search is part of my marketing tool kit. Most often these documents precede my personal contact with those who have received my documents. I need to remember that the sole purpose of these documents is to get me in front of those who receive my documents. Then it is up to me. When I show indifference to the potential company with documents that don’t tell the company what I want to do for them and how I can do it, based on past performances; then what should I expect?
