Tonight, the House Committee on Rules will be considering an amendment to
the American Energy and Infrastructure Jobs Act of 2012 (many on the Hill
are calling it the Highway bill among other names). The NFB opposes
amendment, #217 and submitted by Congressman Steve LaTourette, because it
allows commercialization of highway rest stops. Up until now, the only
commercial activity permitted at rest stops is the operation of vending
machines by blind entrepreneurs under the Randolph-Sheppard Act, so this
amendment will create competition for those vendors and potentially threaten
their income and employment. Congresswoman Virginia Foxx is on the Rules
committee, so we are urging you and other state presidents who's Members of
Congress sit on the Committee to call those offices and urge the Member not
to allow the amendment. The hearing is tonight at 5:00pm, so timing is
essential. Thanks for your help and prompt advocacy!
