Governor Morehead School (GMS) for the Blind will have some very special
visitors on Tuesday, March 19, when 14 guide dogs from MIRA USA! and MIRA
Canada visit the campus. Although there are a number of facilities in the
United States that train guide dogs and adults to use those dogs to travel
independently, MIRA trains guide dogs for use by children who are blind and
under the age of 18. Currently, GMS students receive instruction in
traveling with the use of a white cane. On Tuesday, some GMS students will
have the opportunity to experience traveling with the assistance of a guide
dog. To read more, please visit www.ncpublicschools.org and click on the
appropriate link under “News.”
