Research Participation Request: Development of a Genetic Counseling Tactile Aid
The below research participant solicitation is being provided for
informational purposes only. The National Federation of the Blind has
no involvement in this research, but we believe that it may
contribute to our research mission.
Research Title: Development of a Genetic Counseling Tactile Aid
Being conducted by: University of North Carolina, Greensboro
Purpose of the Study
This study aims to develop and evaluate a universally designed
genetic counseling tactile aid by:
(a) identifying genetic counseling topics that people who are blind
and visually impaired believe would be most helpful to be represented
in a tactile aid,
(b) examining personal characteristics, such as experience using
tactile aids and age of onset of vision loss, that may impact the
desire, need or effectiveness of a tactile aid,
(c) creating a 3D-printed tactile aid based on the findings of the
preceding aims, and
(d) evaluating the tactile aid through a focus group with individuals
who are blind and visually impaired.
I am hoping to recruit participants through the National Federation
of the Blind for the survey. I hope to learn from participants their
features of blindness, experience with tactile aids, and what genetic
counseling concepts participants believe would be most helpful
represented in a tactile aid.
Role of the Participants and Anticipated Length of the Study
Participants will complete an online survey that takes approximately
10-15 minutes to complete. Survey participants can volunteer to sign
up for a follow-up focus group. Focus group participants must be 18+
years of age, fluent in English, identify as blind and visually
impaired, and have transportation to Industries of the Blind
Greensboro. Focus group participants will attend a single, one-hour
focus group.
Proposed Participant Compensation
Yes, Survey participants are eligible to enter a drawing for one of
twenty-five $10 Amazon gift cards
Link or Instructions for Participants to Enter the Study
Do you ever wish your healthcare provider could explain visual
concepts to you better?
Are you blind or visually impaired? We would love to hear from you!
Jillian Hughes, a student researcher at UNC Greensboro, is conducting
a research survey to help improve healthcare accessibility. Our goal
is to create a tactile aid to support genetics education in
healthcare. We are conducting a survey to gain input on the creation
of a tactile aid.
Participants will be asked to complete a survey that takes
approximately 10-15 minutes. All participants will have the
opportunity to enter a drawing to win one of twenty-five $10 Amazon
gift cards
Requirements for participation:
-Identify as blind or visually impaired
-18 years of age or older
