Community Corner

A Cure For Bias

by Valli Ferrell

The best cure for bias
Might be blindness
You enter a room full of people
Are they friends or strangers?
You don’t know the difference
Nor can you discern
Age, sex, context
The smallest action:
A wink, a nod,
A knowing look, a frown,
Eludes you, remains unknown
The most beautiful words
Uttered by the ugliest person
The most vitriolic prejudice
Escapes the prettiest mouth
What does it matter?
Dressed in tatters
Or a fine cut suit
Words matter
As long as you can hear
Might blindness be a cure for bias?
Would anyone choose it?

Nancy Matulis: Master Gardener and Member of Hadley Growers

Nancy Matulis is a lifelong gardener with low vision since birth as a result of Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP).

“With limited vision, contrast in the garden is key,” Nancy explains. She plants bright flowers and grows purple beans so she can see them to pick. She also pays careful attention to the location of her raised beds, using wind chimes to help her identify these potential hazards.

A Master Gardener, Nancy puts her extensive horticultural training into practice to grow a variety of plants including vegetables, herbs, garlic, blueberries, and flowers, such as hillsides of perennials.

Nancy is a regular participant in Hadley Growers, sharing inspiration and insights with a community of fellow gardening enthusiasts. “Hadley Growers is so much fun,” Nancy explains. “It’s so interesting to meet and share ideas with gardeners from all over.”

Frank Strong: Writing a New Chapter

Frank Strong, 68, has always had a passion for music and was recently inducted into the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame. Known as “Freight Train Frank Strong,” he performs blues, folk, country and Americana music in venues including schools, coffeehouses, and music festivals.

With help from Hadley’s Writers’ Circle, he is now writing about his love for the railroad, too.

While Strong did some writing during his career in disability services, he never considered himself a serious writer. Recently retired, Frank is now taking his interest in railroad lore to the printed page to work on articles for a state history magazine.

As he begins this new chapter, Strong explains, “I want to be more comfortable with writing, and the Writers’ Circle is a great place to start. It is an interesting cross-section of writers and wonderful to learn and have the support of this group of people.”

What’s That Sound? It’s Hadley!

When thinking about the intro music for our podcast series, Ricky Enger, a learning expert in our technology group and the host of our podcast, Hadley Presents, challenged the team: “This is an opportunity to think about a signature sound—an audio logo that we could use into the future.”

Ricky suggested connecting with Andre Louis, a composer in London. Andre, blind since birth, has tremendous talent and a keen ability for connecting brands and audiences through sound.

We reached out to Andre, describing the community we serve, the practical nature of the help we offer and the emotional impact some may feel when facing vision loss later in life. He immediately went to work turning these insights into music.

The melody he created with Hadley in mind is upbeat and encouraging. We shared the track with Ricky Enger and got an enthusiastic “Yes!”

Next, Douglas Walker, technology group leader (and musician, himself) was enlisted to offer ideas on how to move forward. He and Andre connected and the result is really fun and foundational for Hadley’s future.

Andre selected four distinct notes to serve as an audio logo, playing at the beginning of videos and workshops. The music track and variations will be used for our new podcast series, the on hold music for our phone lines and more. We are excited to round out our new brand with our very own signature sound!

Braille Pen Pals

Ruth Hartman and her braille pen pal write to each other every few weeks. “I loved having a pen pal as a child, so when the opportunity came to be connected with someone I could write to using braille, I jumped at the chance. It’s fun to get mail!”

“We live in different parts of the country and have very different lives,” Ruth explains. “I’ve enjoyed learning what’s going on with her. She’s an artist and rides a tandem bike with her husband. I listen to a lot of books, enjoy baseball, and am trying to garden. We share that kind of everyday news.”

Corresponding has kept up Ruth’s braille writing skills. “If not for my pal, my braille writing would suffer. It’s really maintaining and even building my skills.”

Another reason you may consider getting a braille pen pal, according to Ruth, is the connection it provides to someone else with a visual impairment. “A lot of blind people are isolated from each other. I’m the only blind person in a sighted community. It’s nice to have ongoing connection to another blind person.”

Interested in having a braille pen pal of your own? Contact Susan Fisher at <mailto:susan at hadley.edu> susan at hadley.edu or call 800.323.4238, ext. 6658 by June 30.
