Accessibility Excellence Advocate, Education and Employment

The National Federation of the Blind is a membership organization of blind people from each of the fifty states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. As America's civil rights organization of the blind, the Federation is a coordinated network of skilled advocates, resources, and programs that raise expectations of the blind in society and create opportunities for blind people to live the lives they want.

The staff of the Federation are central to the organized blind movement by providing support, professional expertise, and daily contributions to the success of the organization. Working under the direction of the Federation's elected President, the staff advise the organization's leadership and contribute to the vibrant, energetic, and collaborative culture of the organization that raises expectations throughout society.

The Accessibility Excellence Advocate, Education and Employment reports to the executive director for Accessibility Excellence and is the nation’s subject matter expert on technology that permits blind people to maximize their potential in education and employment. The role is part of the Federation’s Center of Excellence in Nonvisual Accessibility, which works relentlessly to ensure that technology facilitates blind people living the life they want.

This role requires a tech-savvy, articulate communicator, negotiator, and advocate capable of understanding the current technical landscape, while being able to promote the Federation’s policies and priorities that will deliver an even better tomorrow. This role requires a person with the ability to communicate complex technological concepts at both a highly technical and non-technical level, to suit the audience.

The ideal candidate will possess a deep personal commitment to the Federation’s philosophy and to raising expectations of blind people in all aspects of society. The ideal candidate must have the ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, various day trips, and overnight travel in order to meet a variety of external deadlines.

Responsibilities

*	Serve as a public-facing ambassador and advocate for the Federation's mission and values, ensuring that technology is always presented as a facilitator for blind people to succeed.
*	Advocate for current and future blind learners and workers to access curricula, training, collaboration suites, and enterprise systems on equal terms.
*	Foster productive relationships with developers of software used in the education and employment sectors, to ensure blindness is no barrier to using the most appropriate software for a given task.
*	Author comprehensive reviews/benchmarks of software available in employment and education that will inform these industries and incentivize them to raise the bar.
*	Produce articles, podcast segments, and webinars for blind students, entrepreneurs, and those in or pursuing employment or study as a means of communicating our knowledge to blind people who will benefit from it.
*	Monitor and provide advice on technology used by blind people to travel to, from, and around work and school.
*	Act as both collaborator and watchdog with technology developers, encouraging progress while guarding against approaches that diminish blind people’s equality or independence.
*	Actively and regularly engage with NFB affiliates, divisions, and members with an interest in education and employment software to ensure we maximize the collective wisdom of the organized blind movement.
*	Actively monitor and respond to concerns and insights from Federation members to ensure advocacy priorities reflect the real experiences and aspirations of blind people.
*	Collaborate, make recommendations, provide technical advice, and perform detailed evaluations in service of the core programs of the Federation in partnership with other Federation members/staff in areas such as legal work, advocacy priorities, and capacity building projects.
*	Handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
*	Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

*	Demonstrated familiarity with the access technology used by blind people, including screen readers and Braille displays, on all commonly used desktop and mobile platforms. Lived experience is strongly preferred.
*	Strong analytical and reasoning skills in evaluating the current state of education and employment software, while being able to plan a road map for greater accessibility.
*	An articulate advocate with the ability to balance advocacy with diplomacy, maintaining constructive relationships even when delivering difficult messages.
*	Proven ability to represent an organization publicly with authority, confidence, and authenticity, including in high-stakes or adversarial contexts.
*	Well-developed public speaking and presentation skills.
*	Ability to command respect and convey authority in diverse forums.
*	The ability to write clearly for diverse audiences, ranging from the highly technical to distilling complex concepts in a nontechnical way.
*	A self-starter who demonstrates initiative, while respecting that our members determine our priorities.
*	Effective networking with diverse stakeholders.
*	Experience producing quality audio content, or the ability to learn how to do so.

Education and Experience

*	Lived experience as a blind person preferred.
*	At least five years’ experience in training or advocacy relating to technology used in education and/or employment.
*	Experience in influencing product roadmaps or standards through advocacy or policy work.
*	Familiarity with relevant accessibility standards and regulations (e.g., Section 508, ADA, WCAG) and their application to technology in the education and employment sectors.
*	Relevant technical certifications are an advantage.
