Building capacity across the state is one of our greatest successes.

 <https://ndassistive.org/senior-safety-program/>

We’re partnering with the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction on a project we’re calling AT Builders. In this collaboration, we’re recruiting and training liaisons from special education units on assistive technology, its benefits, and how to match the devices with students. Their abilities to generate energy around assistive technology, and eventually perform assessments and recommendations will help kids, families, and teachers across the state.

(The photo above was taken at an AT Builders Day in Bismarck earlier this month)

The coolest part about some of our new partnerships is how many other organizations we’ve been able to connect with. This table was set up at our AT Builders Day. It is full of devices available through the Anne Carlsen Center, that works with kids across the state. Notice the toys, switches, mounts, and other great assistive devices!

AT of the Month

The Stylish Walker

Making Walkers and Scooters Cooler.

A presenter from the School of Innovation and Design at the University of Colorado shared results from a survey with the AT Act programs recently. She said less than half the people who are prescribed a walker, actually use it. That’s alarming considering how many people end up in the emergency room due to falls. Her very believable stat was 2.7 million fall related ER visits per year in the U.S. - averaging about $18,000 per visit.

In order to encourage use of walkers (because people in the same survey said they didn’t use walkers because they made them look and feel old) they’re developing ones that look and feel cooler, more stylish. The one above is just an example of the future of walkers as industry looks to replace the tennis ball walkers of the past.

The speaker shared that they’ve recently partnered with the makers of Ferrari cars to find a design that people will be proud to use.

Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark - If You Leave

Album: Pretty in Pink Soundtrack, 1986

There are a couple of soundtracks from the 80s I consider a step or two above the rest. One of my very favorites is the soundtrack for the movie, Pretty in Pink (the movie wasn’t as good as other John Hughes flicks). If You Leave kicks off that album with a bang!

The drums hit immediately and I find my feet tapping throughout the whole song. Plus, it’s so easy to sing too (you don’t want to hear me sing, it’s bad, but I still like to do it). The lyrics are sweet and the chorus has just enough of a lift to get me singing at the top of my lungs. A bit of trivia about the song - it was written specifically for the final prom scene in the movie because Hughes wanted a song to match the tempo of “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” the big hit from The Breakfast Club.

I love this 80s pop stuff. It’s so good. But 80s rock might be just a smidge better. So, expect a rocker next month!!
