  Hi Robert,

Sometimes I think that we assume that people know what we have progressively learned over the years of being members of the NFB. This occurred to me when talking to a woman who has MD and has absolutely no idea of the help she can get. She is now a client of the NCBVI and will be learning these things but what I was thinking is just to have a simple session explaining to people the basics of getting a talking book or receiving newsline or requesting large print checks from their bank or free information on getting phone numbers from the telephone company. Just stuff like that. It may be redundant to some but then again if we brainstorm some things and have tables of demos set up for simple assistive items I think that we could draw some seniors in to our group. There are over 60 people in Dawes County that are receiving benefits in some way for blindness. This number doesn't even come close to the number of people who have age related macular degeneration who are still in the attitude of brying to cover up their blindness and are embarrassed by it so do not have many of the tools that they could be using. We need to reach those people somehow. If we have a firm program and each of us gets out there through the churches or whatever and get it advertised that we are doing this session strictly for seniors who may not have a handle on technology and believe that that eliminates them from assistance then I believe we will be doing a great service. Am I making any sense?

I wish I could attend the phone conferences but always at work . Maybe some brainstorming of simple services that could be presented could be done at our next Senior Board meeting????

  Question:

RE: Our 2013 State NFB Convention. What topic would you like our convention workshop cover. We would have a senior luncheon. then we have a program from 1:00 up to 4:00. We think there will be other great seminars/workshops that the seniors should experience more than one workshop. (Stay in the Senior workshop all day, that is all you get.)

So what topic? (We could group up several topics.

  Send your thoughts to me.

  Thanks,

  Allison
