NATIONAL FEDERATION OF THE BLIND OF NEBRASKA SENIOR DIVISION MEETING
SECRETARY'S REPORT Monday, April 8, 2019<br><br>

The NFBN Senior Division met by telephone conference Monday, April 8,
2019. In the absence of President Robert Newman, who was waiting for his
first grandchild to be born, Vice President Barbara Loos called the
meeting to order at 7:01 PM CDST. Members present were: Vice President
Barbara Loos, Secretary Linda Mentink, Board Member Nancy Oltman, Chris
Boone, Gina Finnell, Brad Loos, and Jerry Whitlow. Guests present were:
Nancy Flearl, Walt Hively, and Della Johnston.<br><br>

Jerry recited the NFB Pledge. Chris will recite it next month.<br><br>
<br><br>
Nancy Flearl, Supervisor of NCBVI's Older Blind Services, was our guest
speaker. She talked to us first about Order of Selection. They have
closed all categories of their rehabilitation services. The budget will
be reviewed each month to determine if some people can be removed from
the waiting list. This does not impact Older Blind Services, because the
money that comes into the agency is separate funding. The agency is doing
more group teachings. The conference for Older Blind coming up May 7-9 in
Kearney is the first in five or six years. Chris asked a couple questions
for clarification. Barbara asked what the follow-up is going to be for
the conference, and if there will be a limited number of times with a
client. The follow-up will extend into August or September. Right now
there is no cap on the number of sessions. Nancy read the conference
agenda. They have an independent living program for people under 55, but
it has no money until July. Chris asked Nancy to tell us about the
Project Search job fair for students on April 30. She did, and also said
that Project Search was started out of Cincinnati Children's Hospital.
Places of employment partner with school districts. These students work
there for a year. If there are openings, they will be hired. If there are
no openings, they work with other businesses where the student's skills
can also be used. She mentioned the impact that Dr. Nyman had on what is
now in place here in Nebraska.<br><br>

Linda read the March, 2019, Secretary's Report. There were no additions
or corrections, so the report will become a part of our record.<br><br>
<br><br>
Nancy mentioned that she talked to Robert, and she thinks that we have an
Activity Director for next month. Barbara said that Robert has talked
with Dave Andrews about being on our meeting at some point. Robert wanted
her to find out if we would like to have him come on the call. We thought
that was a great idea.<br><br>

There were a couple questions, which we will ask her next month.<br><br>

OLD BUSINESS. Chris reported that there were three people who were in
Lincoln for the Legislative Day for the first time, ten Federationists in
all. She didn't have any updates.<br><br>
<br><br>
Barbara, Chris and Linda reported that the Friends of the Commission
Fund-Raising Committee has had two meetings so far, one with Carlos
Servan and one with John Wick. Chris wrote to Carlos requesting ideas
from him and the staff for specific projects for which grant money could
be asked. She got a reply from Carol Jenkins suggesting Project
Independence and WAGES.<br><br>
<br><br>
BRAGS AND DRAGS. Linda's Apex fell off the arm of her chair, and could
need some expensive repair. She has another, so she's not without a
unit!<br><br>
<br><br>
Chris and Doug's nephew is getting married in October. At the beginning
of May she and Doug are going to Indiana to volunteer at the Braille,
Employment, Education and Training conference put on by the Michiana
portion of that affiliate, which is Northern Indiana and southern
Michigan. Her aunt is turning 90 June 1, so they will be going to the
celebration.<br><br>
<br><br>
Nancy Oltman thanked us for the prayers for her relatives. Her
brother-in-law Floyd is back home, and will be 89 in June. Her niece
Julie's heart is now functioning at 40%.<br><br>
<br><br>
Della moved, Linda seconded, that the meeting be adjourned. We adjourned
at 8:35 PM.<br><br>
