[Nebraska-students] Cane and vacation

Hi Alli, if you're still taking suggestions/input, I had a similar thing
happen to me. I was about 18 and had met with some of my now really good
friends and in the process noticed that they took their canes wherever they
went, and that I didn't always, especially if I was going somewhere I was
familiar with. We had a trip to our Minnesota cabin coming up, and I had
never taken my cane before, but that time I decided to take it. My family
didn't like it very well, but I think I explained it somehow, saying that I
had it in case I needed it and so that I wouldn't have to rely on them all
the time, in case they were busy. The first time they had their questions
and doubts, but they have since gotten used to it, or so it seems. As for
keeping it out of the way, there might be a few options. My cane is a
straight cane and, since there is no one who usually sits next to me in the
van I prop it up on the bench seat beside me against the cat carrier where
Annie, our cat travels. I often wedge it against something to keep it from
flying around in the event of a sudden stop. You may also lay it along the
edge like Amy Mason suggested, maybe by the door or, if you're worried about
it falling out, on the other side. You may also lay it between bucket seats
if your van has those.
Hope this is helpful!
Hannah L

Hey guys it's Alli,
I'm going on a road trip with my parents, brother and sister. I'm going to
see my friend in New York while they go on a cruise. My friend knows that I
am blind and is very helpful when I have trouble seeing, as is her family.
My family would like me to take my folding cane instead of a straight cane,
because it fits better in small places (ie our van), and I can fold it up
when I am with them and feel comfortable in the area I am familiar in. I am
very unfamiliar with the town my friend lives in, and found that it would've
been nice to have a straight cane last time I was there (I believe I took
the folding cane, but didn't find much use for it, because it didn't give me
very useful information). I know that it is safer for me to travel with a
cane, but which one should I take? The folding so that I can just fold it
up when I am with my parents and let them help me or do I go against what my
parents and siblings want and take the straight cane? Any ideas would be
helpful!
Thanks in advance!

Hey Alli,

Good question, and believe me you aren't the only one who's struggled with
this.

My advice would be to take the cane you think is going to be most
useful to you. In the end, your family aren't the ones who are going to need
to use it, or the ones who are going to get information from it. Maybe it is
a little more difficult to store, but you know how to put it in the van
properly so it's out of the way, and if you don't I know any of us on the
list who use them would be happy to explain it to you.

It's hard when our parents don't understand why we prefer the tools
we do. My dad still doesn't understand why I use a straight cane rather than
my folding cane. Once in a great while, when It won't matter, I will bend to
his wishes. (The example that is coming to mind is his recent wedding.) But,
those are times when I absolutely know I won't be doing much traveling at
all. And, even then, I had a straight cane in the car, just in case. You
might try explaining why you prefer the straight cane, sometimes that makes
a difference. In the end they are your parents and they want you to be happy
and safe.

Just my two cents,

Karen

Hi Alli,

I'm so thrilled to see you thinking about this. I know it's a really hard
decision to make those first steps toward independence, especially when they
disagree with your family. I had some of the same difficulties with my
parents when I first started choosing to use a cane.

Personally, I would recommend that you take both canes. You can lay your
straight cane flat along the edge of the van and keep it out of the way.
That way ou have it when you need it, but if you bring the folding cane,
when you feel that it is more appropriate to use it, you have that option as
well. As an added bonus, if either cane should meet with an unfortunate
incident, you have a backup to get you by.

Hope this helps, and have a blast on your vacation!

Amy
