Dear NFB of Nevada Members and friends,
As we wrap up a remarkable October for Blind Awareness Month, I wanted to take a moment to highlight the fantastic achievements and contributions our chapters made across Nevada. Your dedication, passion, and commitment to spreading awareness about blindness and the work of the National Federation of the Blind are truly inspiring.
Disability Awareness Day Celebration - Las Vegas Chapter
Our Las Vegas chapter had a strong presence at the Disability Awareness Day Celebration held at Sammy Davis Park. Despite the heat, our volunteers engaged with attendees and shared insights about blindness and the NFB. It was heartening to see a great turnout and so much interest from the community. Thank you to everyone who helped make this event a success!
White Cane Day Walks Across Nevada
All three of our Nevada chapters marked White Cane Day with impactful events:
• Northern Nevada: Members joined forces with the Washoe County School District’s Teachers of the Blind for a walk to raise awareness of the significance of the white cane. This collaboration was a wonderful example of how we can work with local institutions to spread our message.
• Las Vegas Chapter: Approximately 80 participants gathered at Container Park, where many attendees were new to learning about blindness. It was a fantastic opportunity to introduce our work to the broader community, helping them better understand and support our cause.
• Southern Nye County Chapter: The Pahrump chapter hosted its second annual White Cane Walk, complete with live music, food, and fellowship. This lively event brought our community closer together, and I thank everyone who helped make it such a memorable day.
Advocacy in San Francisco
Additionally, we’re proud to note Nevada’s representation at the Uber and Lyft protest in San Francisco, aimed at raising awareness about these companies’ refusal to comply with federal regulations requiring them to pick up blind passengers with guide dogs. This important demonstration underlines our commitment to advocating for equal access and ensuring our voices are heard.
Thank you all for your hard work, enthusiasm, and for standing together to make a difference. October was a month filled with achievements, and it’s all because of each of you. Let’s keep this momentum going as we continue to break down barriers and redefine what it means to be blind.
With gratitude and pride,
Mark Tadder
President, National Federation of the Blind of Nevada
