At the Andrew Heiskell Braille and Talking Book Library, we’ve been
providing volunteer-powered technology education since 2010. Although our
department became staffed in 2014, our peer technology coaches still
volunteer their expertise to help us provide about 150 hours of one-to-one
assistance with smartphones, tablets, computers, and other hardware each
month with a focus on screen readers, magnification and other accessibility
features. Our volunteers mentor library patrons as they learn to download
books, use social networking accounts, set up email, use accessible apps to
increase their independence, and more. Volunteers also assist patrons who
are studying Braille, help design tactile graphics, co-facilitate workshops
and have input into the programs we present each quarter.
We’re interested in working with people with all levels of vision who are
passionate about accessibility and want to share their experience and
wisdom with others in the community. Volunteers can choose to focus on
one-on-one coaching, workshops or behind-the-scenes research and design.
Shifts can be as short as three hours and as long as a full day, and we
welcome volunteers to work as few or as many shifts as they like.
To join our growing community of volunteers, please email your interest to
Chanceyfleet at Nypl.org or call (212) 621-0627. Just let us know what kind of
schedule you’re interested in and which skills you bring to the community
(for example: screen readers, magnification, Braille, Android, iOS, Mac,
PC, design, voice assistants). We’ll hold a volunteer orientation in early
January.
