*Hi folks,*

*I’m adding some detail to the announcement below. Tomorrow’s presenters,
from ELIA Life, believe that they have developed a tactile font that is
easier to learn and read than Braille for some people, particularly those
with decreased tactile sensitivity and people with later-in-life vision
loss. The ELIALife team is also working on a new printing process for
tactile fonts and images. Tomorrow’s event is a chance to explore the ELIA
project and, critically, to provide positive feedback and constructive
criticism to the developers. If you or people in your life use tactile
media to communicate images and texts, please consider attending (or
getting in touch with the developers at a later time) to provide your
valuable perspective. *

*Please see the original announcement, with registration information and
contact details for ELIA, below. Thanks for reading!*

*The AT Crowd: a Place to Talk About and Test New Ideas in Accessible
Technology*

*Thursday November 2, 5:00 PM – 6:45 PM*

*Register by emailing *ChanceyFleet at nypl.org* or (212) 621-0627*

*This quarterly gathering is a chance for designers, developers and
students of accessible technology to network with assistive technology
users. Come try*

*out accessible apps and services, share your ideas and help shape the
future of inclusive technology.*

*This quarter our presenters are from *ELIA Life Technology, Inc.: Andrew
Chepaitis, President/CEO; Byron Johnson,

Research and Operations Associate; and Isabela Caetano, Engineer Intern.

Andrew and his team have used industrial design, organization psychology,
design thinking, and user testing to develop a tactile system for the
visually impaired. The ELIA Frames are a tactile alphabet that is built on
previous knowledge of Roman characters. The systems they are developing
support ELIA, braille, and any other tactile font. Their goal is to bring
greater “Education, Literacy, and Independence to All” (ELIA). The ELIA
Life team seeks to collaborate with people and organizations who share the
same goals.

We hope you can join us Thursday for a talk and hands-on presentation of
ELIA Life’s work and a roundtable discussion about moving tactile literacy
forward. Light refreshments will be served.
