Subject: Call to join us for community conversations - please spread the word!

Hi all,

please help us spread the word on this by sending the below message out to your listservs, posting on your facebook, and emailing or inviting contacts you have in other disability-related groups if you wish, as suggested at our last meeting.

Much appreciated and looking forward to it!

---
Please join us at the Andrew Heiskell Braille and Talking Book Library on Saturday March 3rd at 12 noon sharp for a Community Conversation that will engage around planning events and actions towards increasing access to information and technology, media literacy, acceptance of diverse points of view and experiences, and spreading awareness around different experiences of disability both within and outside of the community.

Building on the first two meetings in this series, community members will get a recap of the proposed issues to work on and decide how to move forward towards building bridges with each other and working towards greater awareness and equality, whether that be action planning, inviting guest speakers, or requesting services and programs from the library.

This event is part of a new program series aimed at exploring today's issues in thoughtful, productive, group conversations, leading to strategic planning. Brought to you in partnership with the Greater New York Council of the Blind and the National Federation of the Blind. RSVP!
What it is:

The Community Conversations Cafe is a series that engages Heiskell Library community members (or potential members) in a moderated, open discussion on the topics most important to them, with the aim of creating greater understanding from our combined viewpoints and experiences, as well as informing future actions and strategic planning. This is NOT a lecture.

Why Attend?

This program offers a chance to engage in thoughtful, moderated, productive dialogue, gives everyone a chance to both speak and hear from each other, and work together towards pulling out some insights from our combined experiences. It's a chance to make your voice heard, learn from others, and contribute towards a larger goal. You might meet new people. Plus there will be refreshments.

The December community conversation cafe will build on the first one, focusing on the topics:

  * What role does Information Access, Literacy, and the Media Play in the ways we all exclude others?
  * What would a more ideal future look like?
  * What will it take to get there and what steps can we take?

What Happens After We Talk?

The outcomes will be reported back in a blog post from the library and taken into consideration in future planning and actions. The group will also actively suggest and plan events and action items for moving forward.

This program will be facilitated by trained Library staff, along with our community partners: the local chapters of American Council of the Blind and National Federation of the Blind.
Date:

Saturday March 3rd, 12 noon - 2 PM

RSVP by sending an email to lymanclayborn at nypl.org<mailto:lymanclayborn at nypl.org>, or call 212-621-0637<tel:(212)%20621-0637> and leave a message.
