Circus Sampler Sunday!

Sponsored by the NYPBC division and the NYS BELL academy

Please join us for this sensational sampler of circus skills, sight not
required for Success. We are excited to welcome blind and VI children, ages
8 and up, living in, or able to travel to the Buffalo NY area to a circus
inspired arts experience. The New York Parents of Blind Children, a proud
division of the National Federation of the Blind of New York State inc has
partnered with the New York State Braille Enrichment for Literacy and
Learning Academy, to sponsor this event, which is being run by the talented
professionals at the Bird’s Nest Circus Arts studio. We are pleased to offer
this free workshop to inspire young blind movers and shakers. We know that
exposing blind children to experiences which inspire adventurousness,
encourage competence and instill confidence will help to raise expectations
of blind children. Participants will have the opportunity to utilize a
variety of ground-based prop manipulations and to spend time on an
assortment of aerial apparatuses.

The activities and concepts presented will speak not only to your child’s
inner athlete, but to their inner artist, and scientist as well. Students
will increase their body awareness, refine their proprioception, and
discover their own strength on static trapeze, aerial hoop, and aerial
hammock. In addition prop-based circus arts employing: fabric dance scarves,
hula hoops, and poi (a spinning prop originating from the Māori people of
New Zealand) will reenforce fine motor skills, enhance tactual
discrimination, and engage kids with bodily kinesthetic learning. Talented
teaching artist, Benjamin Berry will facilitate the exploration of elements
of creative movement, including Space, Time, and Force, because… athletes
can succeed in STEM, scientists can hone their creativity in the arts, and
artists can find their niche in athletics.
