If a lot of people are all coming in on the same flight, or train, Jim or another sighted individual may be able to pick up a number of people at once, as our van seats seven, including the driver.

Please join us for our Summer Celebration of our One Year Anniversary as the Rochester Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind of New York.

When? Saturday, August 12th 2017 from 10:00 A.M. until 6:00 P.M. as an open-house format. Lunch will be served at mid-day and the open-house format has been selected to give individuals as much or as little party as they desire and to allow any visitors from out of town to have a fair-sized chunk of time with us, even if their travel arrangements cause them to arrive rather late or necessitate them departing quite early.

Where? The party will be held in the Webster park in the Ridge Hill shelter. The street address for the park is 255 Holt Road Webster New York 14580. For those coming from out of town, Webster is a suburb of the city of Rochester and is not far from the city. Once your cab, Lift or Uber driver enters the park based on the street address, they can simply look for the Ridge Hill shelter. It is a large pavilion with several picnic tables inside, and we will have signs up for our event at the shelter so it should be easily spotted by whoever is providing your transportation. No, there is not RTS Access, para-transit access to this park. The only two parks available that met our needs were not within the service area. For those coming from out of town, this does not affect you as you would have to take Uber or similar anyway. For those in our area, a cost cutting suggestion, if I May? Consider meeting up with two to four people at one location using para-transit, then split the cost of one Uber or Lift to get to the party.

Who? All members of NFB Rochester are invited. The Rochester Pioneers, our local Beep Baseball team is also invited in its entirety. All members of NFB New York are also invited, from any chapter or division. To all NFB members local, or from out of town, please feel free to invite friends, family members or co-workers who would enjoy a party and who would benefit from having a positive experience along with many of their blind friends and neighbors. Families of blind children are also welcome, so please feel free to pass this along to parents or guardians of blind children. Families and children are welcome. This is not a child-centered event, but we have half-priced tickets at $10 for children, which include the same great Dinosaur Barbecue food and Cheesy Eddy’s cheesecake, there is a playground in the park for kids to visit, kids can enjoy watching the service dog costume contest, and if they are blind or visually impaired, they are welcome to participate in the decorate your cane contest, and a few things will be planned for the kids specifically. Of course, all service dogs are welcome, and if you do use a guide or other type of service dog, please see below for details on the costume contest. Blindness professionals from any agency are also welcome to join us for this event, so you may reach out as you wish to invite such individuals.

Why?

We will have a delicious lunch from the Dinosaur Barbecue, a great local barbecue restaurant that has expanded beyond Rochester into some other locations in New York State, featuring two different meat offerings, two tasty sides and corn bread as well.

Sumptuous cheese cake from Cheesy Eddy’s another amazing local business that makes unique and rich flavors of delectable cheese cake.

Tasty home-made offerings from some of our members available all-day before and after our main meal is served.

A decorate your white cane contest, in which you can decorate your cane however you wish. You pay $2 to enter the contest, and the winner collects half the proceeds from the contest as a prize and the rest goes to benefit our young chapter as it grows. Blind kiddos and adults are welcome to enter, as are guide dog users who also use a white cane, and if a sighted individual wishes to decorate a blind friend’s old spare cane, they may enter as well.

A service/guide dog costume contest: Dress up your guide or other type of service dog and compete for a prize. As in the decorate your cane contest, it is $2 to enter, and the winner will receive half of the proceeds, with the other half going towards our chapter. Current and retired guides are eligible to enter. You may dress up along with your dog for a team costume, or simply dress up your dog, as a character from a book or film, an animal from the zoo, a vehicle, another type of professional dog, your imagination is the limit.

A number of fun raffles: We will be selling tickets for a 50-50 style raffle, as well as holding a Chinese Auction to raffle off themed baskets of fun and interesting items.

Other fun games and contests: We may have a horse-race similar to that held at the New York State convention last year and at the Buffalo chapter’s summer party. We will have a blind/sighted team contest where-in each team consists of one blind and one sighted participant who must work together to complete a series of fun tasks. Yes, there will be a grand prize for this event as well. And other fun activities.

A Beep Baseball Demonstration and short just-for-fun game: Courtesy of the Rochester Pioneers we will have a demonstration of Beep Baseball techniques followed by an opportunity for anyone who wishes to try out this sport as we play a short game to get a feel for what it is like.
