Minkara, winner of the 2019 Holman Prize for Blind Ambition. Mona conceived and
produced Planes, Trains and Canes, a Youtube documentary that captures her
experience as an independent blind traveler exploring London, Tokyo and other cities
around the world. Join us to hear Mona's perspective on the diverse cultural
responses to blindness she encountered, the affordances and limitations of
technology, and more. We'll include time for you to ask Mona your own
questions.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0in 0in 8pt;line-height:107%;font-size:11pt;font-family:Calibri,sans-serif">About Mona: <span style="font-size:18pt;line-height:107%">Mona
Minkara is one of the only blind professors in the field of Bioengineering.
Currently, she is an Assistant Professor at Northeastern University. She lost
her vision at the young age of seven as a result of macular degeneration and
cone-rod dystrophy. She pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and Middle Eastern
studies at Wellesley college. In 2015, she received her PhD in Chemistry from
the University of Florida. Mona then joined the research group of Dr. <span style="color:rgb(33,37,41);border:1pt none windowtext;padding:0in">J. Ilja Siepmann at the University of Minnesota where her
research focus shifted to studies of surfactants using Monte Carlo methods</span><span style="color:black">.</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0in 0in 8pt;line-height:107%;font-size:11pt;font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><span style="font-size:18pt;line-height:107%;color:black">She
now studies surfactants found within the lungs and leverages that knowledge to
conduct research related to COVID-19.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0in 0in 8pt;line-height:107%;font-size:11pt;font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><span style="font-size:18pt;line-height:107%;color:black">Mona
is an advocate for blind and visually impaired individuals. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0in 0in 8pt;line-height:107%;font-size:11pt;font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><span style="font-size:18pt;line-height:107%;color:black">In
2019 she was awarded the Holman Prize along with two other fellow adventurers. Mona
created Planes Trains and Canes, a mini documentary series featured on her
YouTube channel. Mona takes you on a journey to five different cities around
the world showing people what it’s like for a blind person to travel
independently using only public transportation.</span></p>
