<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">This is also a time of year of reflection. I sat at my computer, reviewing this article about the Blind during the holidays that just did not seem adequate. What was wrong with it, I kept asking myself as I reread it repeatedly. Then, someone told me to read it backwards. Well, not word for word, but paragraph by paragraph and see what questions came up. </p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">I came away with more questions about us as Blind people and how we perceive our contributions during the holiday season as well as how others view us as a group during this time of year. Tell me what you think of my re-written, thought-provoking piece for the holiday season.</p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">The first think I noticed is that everything focused on Christianity. Searches for Hanukkah and other December related celebrations, and the Blind, yielded little. </p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">Looking through my files, I find little mentioned about the holidays in relation to our Blind ancestors. What I did have were newspaper stories that let their readers know if most of the children from the school for the Blind went home or what the Christmas tree looked like that was donated to the school for the Blind. Annual reports from communities, counties, and state departments that served the Blind provided reports on how much money was spent on the indigent Blind during the past year, even though the year was not over. I wondered why these reports were published before the end of the year and before Christmas. Was it to show how charitable the local government or charities were towards the Blind? When the local citizens read such articles, did they feel more charitable towards the Blind beggars, or did they wonder why, after their tax dollars were spent on the Blind, the Blind wanted more and had their tin cups out in December?</p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">Several charities held sales of items made by the Blind or sold items to provide gifts for the Blind during the holidays. Usually, these were sighted clubs and organizations who did their part for the Blind. Many held holiday celebration events to pat themselves on the back for being so good to the Blind all year. But the guest lists did not include the Blind, unless to entertain. Groups included, Women\u2019s clubs, Sororities, Council of Jewish Women, Churches, Country Clubs, and agencies and organizations of and for the Blind. </p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">Interesting to note that an article from December of 1949 in the <span style="font-style: italic;">St. Croix Avis</span> called on the local government to provide a \u201cChristmas contribution\u201d to the Blind. As the years progressed, the tone of the Christmas giving for the Blind focused more on the government, not charities to do more for the Blind. Yet, many charities and civic organizations in the late 1940\u2019s got into the news by highlighting their gifts to the Blind and the parties they threw for the Blind in their area. Blind men joined civic groups, specifically the Lion\u2019s Clubs. The Blind members played Santa for the Blind children, such as Judge Ned Smith of the Detroit Lion\u2019s Club.</p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">During World War I, many uplifting newspaper articles in December appeared concerning the soldiers and sailors returning home without their sight. Many articles highlighted returning vets while others highlighted the activities of the Red Cross and their rehabilitation program at Evergreen in Maryland. Who benefitted more from those articles I wonder. Was it the Blind men who found an open mind from potential employers when looking for a job? Or, more likely, the donations that came in during the season of giving from the public to the Red Cross to continue doing their \u201cfine work\u201d on behalf of the Blind? Governor T. C. Ray, of Tennessee declared Sunday, December 15, 1918, as Allied Blind Relief Day in hopes that Tennesseans would give generously to the State Committee of the Permanent Blind Relief Fund. There was no mention of hiring a Blind worker or purchasing from Blind businesses to make their end of year bottom line more celebratory.</p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">Agencies and charitable groups for the Blind held holiday parties during the weekday for the Blind. Did the working Blind not get invited? Or are only the poor Blind who did not work, Blind in their minds? As a small percentage of news articles appear around working Blind individuals during this period, were the working Blind men and women an unseen population? </p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">Many stories appeared particularly at this time of year in the local papers of Blind people getting their sight back. If there was not a real person to stick with that label, a poem or short story was printed highlighting the miracle of a gift of vision. Getting their sight back often meant that they could see shapes and light. At the time, legal Blindness was not established. The subject of the article was how the Blind were blessed because of what they gained, even if they still could not read print or have enough vision to travel safely by themselves without a cane, dog, or guide. I had to wonder if the same individuals felt they had been blessed or not a year after the story was published. The very few of these individuals I did follow delayed getting Blindness training and often did not become self-sufficient. </p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">For almost 15 years in the early part of the twentieth century, The <span style="font-style: italic;">Daily Alaska Empire </span>newspaper had a full-page poem that promised in one line that on Christmas Day the Blind would see. Good thing the paper was read by few Blind people who wondered on December 26, why they were still Blind.</p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">Cartoons in newspapers such as <span style="font-style: italic;">The Kennewick Currier</span> for December of 1913, showed a little girl with her puppy, staring up at the Blind beggar and his tin cup, ringing a bell. The header reads, \u201cLove Is Blind.\u201d The Blind beggar has a long beard and a stocking cap. Did the beggar represent Santa to the little girl? Or was it a comment on the Blind beggar tricking the public into dropping a ha\u2019penny in his cup?</p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">The <span style="font-style: italic;">Lake Currier Times</span> from Hammond, Indiana in December of 1919, wrote a short article with a large photograph about the \u201cgirls\u201d at the Clovernook Home for the Blind, hand-copying books into Braille. The women were obviously not in their teens or early twenties. It was common for Blind people to be referred to as a boy or girl, no matter their age, much like racial minorities were treated in the media at that time. </p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">I wondered as I drafted this article how much we as Blind people contributed to the stereotypes and the misconceptions in the past. The 1910 US Census searched for Blind citizens in particular. The study of that year\u2019s census revealed that more than 60 percent of Blind adults were employed and self-supporting, not receiving any charity or government support. Granted that by today\u2019s standards, they were not living above the poverty level, yet stories around the holiday season did not focus on the success of the Blind of their community. Did the reporters write what they thought their readers would believe, a miracle of just a little bit of sight vs the story of a happy Blind individual making a living, supporting a family as a news dealer, broom maker, piano tuner, lawyer, or teacher? </p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">An article in the <span style="font-style: italic;">Americus Times Recorder</span> for November 15, 1923, highlighted a Blind, Black man who took control of his Christmas story in the local paper by turning the story around on the public. Troy Johnson, a graduate of the Georgia Academy for the Blind Colored, asked newspapers to write an article about his Christmas chairs for children. He encouraged the public to remember their children in a special way by purchasing from him an appropriately sized chair for the little ones in their families. Troy certainly took creative control of the narrative about himself as a Blind man that year.</p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">Are we any better today in controlling the narrative about the Blind this time of year in the vastly different medias today? This year, I will be paying more attention to articles about the Blind that appear on the radio, television, newspapers, social media, podcasts, and online magazines. I hope you will do the same and let me know if we have changed the narrative in the greater media scene. </p>
