Hi Cindy.

The abacus bracelet I have uses what looks like a rubber stitch marker to slide over the beads.  I think using elastic thread instead might not work so well, because elastic tends to lose its stretchiness after a while.  The rubber ring is flexible enough to let me push a bead through, but doesn’t seem like it will break any time soon.

 

Yep, I tink back too, if I only have a few rows to go back, but, if I have quite a few, like the 15 I had to go back a couple days ago, I just carefully rip back and pick up stitches.  I still have to tink back a row or 2 after that, to fix the stitches I didn’t pick up well, but I think it’s easier than carefully going back all those rows.  The second part of the trick is to carefully keep track of how far I’ve gone back, so as not to mess up my pattern.  I should probably use lifelines more, but often forget that would be a good idea.

Congrats, Tracy, on the bracelets. I think I am going to make an abacus "bracelet" for my knitting. I have one from Hide and Sheep and I love it. While I don't use it as a bracelet, I put it on a locking stitch marker and use that as my beginning of the row marker. I really need at least one more, but it is not in the budget right now (or the near future). I am comfortable with the stringing part and can do the clasp, but I am concerned about using the elastic thread to make the center ring the beads will need to slide through.

Boy do I know about the practice on knitting. I would typically just tink back if it was only a couple of rows. I have a lot of experience doing that since I am a perfectionist with my knitting.

I play the harp, and I had 2 nice stretch bracelets with harp charms, but they both broke.  I decided to remake them.  I thought, if I used elastic again, it would break again, so I remade the first one with beading wire and a toggle clasp.  It came out nice and fits fine, and it seems sturdy.  Today I’ll remake the second one the same way.  Then I’ll have my lovely bracelets to wear at the big harp festival next week. 

 

And, so Cindy knows she has company, I had to rip out part of the sleeve I’ve been knitting.  Luckily, I’ve gotten pretty good at pulling out a few rows, picking up stitches, and carrying on.  Must be all the practice I’ve had.
