It sounds like you are crocheting loosely.  If you kept the same tension,
with a smaller hook, it shouldn't be too tight.

I was aiming to crochet the medium-size hat, and I'm using the hook size the
pattern says for that, but I'm ending up with the large size, which the
pattern says I'd get with a larger hook.

Does this mean I'm crocheting tight, or loose?  Can I change that and still
use the same hook size?

I could go down a hook size, but that would make the crocheting tighter,
right?, and it seems like a nice texture now.

Crocheters, please advise.
