[NFB-Blind-Crafters] Crochet question

They did give a gauge, and I thought I was close enough for rock and roll, but I was wrong. It got more off as I went on, and by the time I got to a second measurement point, I was into large territory. I started over with a smaller hook, and I seem to be OK now.

For my next dumb crochet question, do I count posts or holes when I’m counting stitches? I’ve been counting holes.

This is where making a gauge swatch comes in. The hook listed is a suggestion but they should also list a gauge guide. You use the hook that causes "your" crocheting to match the guide. If you are coming out bigger, that means you need to go down a hook size. However, if you like the density of what you are currently using, then it means you need to alter the pattern. You would take out some repeats and some increases/decreases to get the size you like.

I was aiming to crochet the medium-size hat, and I’m using the hook size the pattern says for that, but I’m ending up with the large size, which the pattern says I’d get with a larger hook.

Does this mean I’m crocheting tight, or loose? Can I change that and still use the same hook size?

I could go down a hook size, but that would make the crocheting tighter, right?, and it seems like a nice texture now.

Crocheters, please advise.
