Depends how big the baby is. I always made my blankets 30 by 30 inches. She can wrap the new born then use the blanket to keep the year old one cozy laying in bed.
No I would not use chunky yarn. The thickest I would use is four ply. Most any yarn that says baby or iced cream will be perfect for a baby soft and durable in the washer. Babies do odd things and their blankets and clothing have to be washed frequently.
A row of single crochet then a row of double makes a lovely blanket. Now some get crazy about little fingers getting stuck in the holes. Then make the hole thing in single crochet. Put a stitch marker at the end of each row to keep your seems straight
The baby must be a girl if she want pink and purple. The Iced cream yarn from Lion Brand, Big Scoop, should give you plenty of yarn for a baby blanket. They have a yarn, so beautiful that is light purple and pink with white possibly, Becky tries to remember and smells smoke.
I suggest going up one hook size for that foundation chain. I also suggest making a swatch to see about hook sizes. You want the swatch to be soft, not so tight it is a board. If it is a board, then go up a hook size. Better to figure this out early, smile.
Becky happy hooker

Good Morning Ericka, I would suggest a blanket that is about 36 inches square.
What do you other folks say?

Hey everybody, as you know, I have limited fit and crochet skills. But I was asked by a friend in colleague to get her brand new granddaughter a blanket. The colors are purple and pink. I am happy to do this for little Viviane but have it the foggiest idea how wide or long it should be. I also don’t know what kind of yard would be best. Bulky is easier to crochet with, but would it be too heavy? I know that babies could suffocate and I certainly don’t want that to happen. I’ve never worked with a pattern, so just giving me a pattern would not be the solution though something very simple with Assistance would be fantastic. She said she doesn’t care if it’s dinner or crocheted add self striping Yoard is fine. Such an honor! Nobody’s ever asked me to do anything before.
I hope this is clear because I’m half asleep. I know I’m asking the right people
