Here are Annie's instructions for a simple macrame wall hanging.  Our next
macrame class is November 10 at 8 PM Eastern.

Tracy,

I am pasting instructions for making a simple wall hanging just for
practice.  I have decided that our last project will be a hanging Christmas
tree using all the knots, including the Chinese crown and the wrap.  We can
talk about it on Monday night.

Simple Wall Hanger for Beginners

 

     MATERIALS:

1 12-inch wooden dowel with bead on each end, 30-yards 100% cotton rope or
6-8mm macrame cord, 1-inch decorative bead (optional).

 

     DIRECTIONS

Cut 8 cords 3-1/2yards long and 1 cord 32 inches long for finished hanger.

 

Step 1: Mount all 8 cords with larks heads to the 12-inch wooden dowel.

Step 2:  tie a row of 2 square knots across row beginning with cords 1-4,
ending with cords 13-16.

Step 3:  tie a row of alternating square knots across row beginning with
cords 3-6, ending with   cords 11-14.

Step 4:  tie a row of square knots across, beginning with cords 1-4, ending
with cords 13-16.

Step 5:  Repeat steps 3-4, adding 2 more rows of square knots.

Step 6:  Tie a square knot with cords 7-10.

Step 7:  Tie square knots with cords 5-8 and 9-12.

Step 8: Tie square knots with cords 3-6 and 11-14.

Step 9: Tie knots with cords 1-4 and 13-16.  (Place bead on center cords
inside diamond if desired.)

Step 10:  Repeat steps 9, 8, and 7 in reverse order to complete the diamond
shape.  

Step 11:  Tie a row of square knots across.

Step 12:  Tie a row of square knots beginning with 3-6, ending with 11-14.

Step 13: Tie a row of square knots across.

Step 14:  Tie knots beginning with cords 3-6, ending with 11-14. 

Step 15: Tie knots with 5-8 and 9-12. 

Step 16: Tie square knot with cords 7-10.

Step 17:  Trim cords into a V-shape of about 8-inches long.  Leave as
fringe.

 

Attach the 32-inch cord to each end of dowel for hanging.
