Does the y mean yarn over?

Here is the pattern for our knit-along. I have modified it from the Morton Cowl pattern, which you can buy on Ravelry if you want. The original pattern is for fingering yarn, and I have modified it to use worsted.
Slip stitch cowl in two colors
SKILL LEVEL EASY
MATERIALS
1 skein worsted yarn, color A
1 skein worsted yarn, color B
Needles
One pair size 7 (4.5mm) or size 8 needles OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE
Notions
Tapestry needle
MEASUREMENTS
Width around approx 36"/91.5cm
Depth 8-12 inches
GAUGE
17 sts = 4 inches with size 8 needles.
Gauge is not critical; close is fine.
Abbreviations
K knit
P purl
RS right side
sl slip stitch
WS wrong side
yback with yarn in back
yfront with yarn in front
COWL
With A, cast on 35-47 sts. For my gauge, 35 stitches makes a depth of 8 inches. 47 stitches would make it around 12 inches. Choose the depth you like, but be sure to cast on an odd number of stitches.
Purl 1 row with A.
Begin Tweed Pattern
ROW 1 (RS) With B, sl 1 st yback, *k1, sl 1 st yback; rep from * to end.
ROW 2 (WS) With B, sl 1 st yfront, *k1, sl 1 yfront; rep from * to end.
ROW 3 With A, knit.
ROW 4 With A, purl.
Rep rows 1–4 for tweed pattern until piece measures approx 36 inches, or desired length,
from beginning (or until all of B is used), ending last rep with a pat row 3.
Bind off purlwise with A.
FINISHING
Sew the bound-off edge to the cast-on edge to form the cowl. Using tapestry needle, weave in ends on the WS.
