NFB KNITTED GNOME

Based on Sarah Schira'S patterns
Modified by Tracy Mousseau, Moose-sew Knits, June 2026

What you need to know:
Knit and Purl
I-cord
Increase and decrease
Work in the round.

Gnomes are a delight to knit and bring pleasure and happiness to the knitter and person receiving them. Make them to hang, stand unpuported or as a toy.

MATERIALS

Worsted Weight yarn:
Colour A, 10 grams / 1oz for Hat
Colour B, 10 grams / 1oz for Body and Arms
Colour C, 5 grams / 1/2oz for Beard and Nose
Knitting needles:
Three 3.75 mm 40cm (US 5, 16in) circular knitting needles
or Four 3.75 mm (US 5) double-pointed knitting needles
Two 4 mm (US US 6) double-pointed knitting needle for beard and armd
Tapestry needle
Removable stitch marker
Clean Polyester stuffing
Metal washers or glass stones for weight at bottom of gnome to help stand unsupported

TENSION
A firm fabric so the stuffing does not show between the stitches.

PATTERN NOTES 
Use two of the double-pointed knitting needles to work the I-cord at the top of the Hat and the Arms.
Use four double-pointed or three 40cm / 16 inch circular knitting needles to knit in the round.

ABBREVIATIONS 
dec - decrease
dpn - double-pointed needle
inc - increase
K - knit
K2tog - knit two sts together (1 st dec)
Kfb - knit into front and back of stitch.
MB - make bobble
ndl - needle
P - purl
sl1P - slip 1 stitch purlwise
psso - pass slip stitch over
rem - remin[ing]
rep - repeat
rnd - round
RS - right side
st[s] - stitch[es]
st-st - stocking stitch
WS - wrong side.

ssK - slip slip knit: slip the next 2 stitches one by one knitwise, insert the tip of the left needle, from left to right, into the fronts of those two stitches and knit them together (1 stitch decrease)
Or you can K2tog through the back loop.

5-Stitch Bobble: Knit into the front,  the back, the front, the back, the front. This turns 1 stitch into 5 stitches.
Working on these 5 stitches: Turn work and P5.
Turn, K5.
Turn, P5.
Next row: Sl1P, K1, K2tog, psso - 3 stitches.
Next row: Sl1P, K2tog, psso - back to 1 stitch.

I-cord: Using two dpns, cast on 3 or 4 stitches. * holding needle in your left hand, slip stitches to righthand end of needle and knit the 4 stitches pulling the yarn snug. Repeat from * until I-cord is desired length. I-cord is worked with the right side facing you at all times. After a few rounds, work will begin to form a tube. Then cut yarn leaving a 4 inch tail. Thread tail onto tapestry needle and draw through the stitches from right to left.

HAT
Using Hat colour, cast on 3 stitches onto 3.75 mm (US 5) dpn.
Work 4 rounds of I-cord.
Rnd 5: Kfb into every st - 6 sts.
Knit 1 round.
Divide stitches onto three double-pointed needles or three circular needles.
Place a removable stitch marker to mark beginning/end of rounds.
The hat and body are worked in three sections. Repeat instructions three times.
Rnd 7: Knit.
Rnd 8: (Kfb into next stitch, K to end of section) thrice - 3 sts per section, 9 sts.
Rnds 9&10: Knit.
Rnd 11: (Kfb into next st, K to end of section) thrice - 4 sts per section 12 sts.
Rep rnds 9-11 6 more times - 30 sts.
Brim:
K 2 rounds.
Purl 3 rounds.
Break off Hat colour. leave a 4 inch tail.

BODY
Join Body colour.
K 4 rounds.
Tie the ends of the Hat and Body tails together and leave inside hat.
Thread the cast on tail at top of hat onto tapestry needle and bring down the centre of I-cord to the inside of the hat. Do not trim the ends, use them as stuffing.
Next rnd: (Kfb into next stitch, K to end of section) thrice - 33 sts.
K 4 rounds.
Next rnd: (Kfb into next stitch, K to end of section) thrice - 36 sts.
K 5 rounds.
You have completed 15 rows.
Purl 1 round.
Move the removable stitch marker onto brim between needles 1 and 3. This will help you place the beard in the correct place. 
Decreases at bottom of gnome:
Knit 1 round.
Next rnd: (K2tog, K4) 6 times - 30 sts.
Next rnd: (K2tog, K3) 6 times - 24 sts.
Next rnd: (K2tog, K2) 6 times - 18 sts.
Next rnd: (K2tog, K1) 6 times - 12 sts.
Firmly stuff the hat and body with small pieces of polyester stuffing so there is no clumping or gaps, being careful to keep the bottom flat and not rounded.
Add the weight if desired.
Place a thin piece of stuffing over the washer or stones so they will not jump out, Next rnd: (K2tog) 6 times - 6 sts.
Break off yarn leaving a 6 inch tail. Thread tail onto tapestry needle and draw through rem sts. Pull snug and fasten off.
Bring end of yarn through stuffing and out back of gnome. Trim close to body. The
end will disappear into gnome.

BEARD AND NOSE
The beard and nose are worked together and is worked flat.
Using 4 mm (US 6) knitting needles and long-tail cast on, cast on 11 sts leaving a 5 inch tail for attaching the beard to the gnome.
Row 2: Knit.
Row 3: K5, MB, K5.
Row 4: Knit.
Row 5: K4, sl1P, K2tog, psso, K4 - 9 sts.
Row 6: Knit.
Row 7: K3, sl1P, K2tog, psso, K3 - 7 sts.
Row 8: Knit.
Row 9: K2, sl1P, K2tog, psso, K2 - 5 sts.
Row 10: Knit.
Row 11: K1, sl1P, K2tog, psso, K1 - 3 sts.
Row 12: Knit.
Cast off the 3 sts.
Cut yarn leaving a short tail and weave in this end.
Sew beard to body directly below the brim opposite to the stitch marker.

ARMS (Make two)
Using Body colour and with 4 mm (US 6) double-pointed needles, cast on 4 sts.
Work 12 rnds of I-cord or until arm is a little shorter from directly below brim to purl ridge.
Break off yarn leaving an 5 inch tail. Thread tail onto tapestry needle and draw needle through stitches on needle from right to left. This end will be used to attach arm to the gnome.
Bring the cast off end up through centre of I-cord and trim. The end should disappear inside the I-cord.

ASSEMBLING GNOME
Sew beard onto the body of the gnome, directly below the brim and opposite the stitch marker. Use the bumps of the garter stitch to hide your stitches.
Sew arms to body on each side of the beard directly below the brim.
